TextMate: Power Editing for the Mac

Some people balk at the idea of paying for a text editor. 'Doesn't OS X ship with a pretty good text editor called TextEdit,' they say. That is very true, but if you make your living creating text documents (whether they be code, blog posts, or content of some other kind) TextEdit just won't cut it.

Enter TUAW favorite TextMate. This program is the swiss army knife of text processing. It includes a number of features that make coding and writing a breeze. It is a complex application, and as such the learning curve can be a little steep. The Pragmatic Programmers latest effort, 'TextMate Power Editing for the Mac,' hopes to turn you into a TextMate pro. Author James Edward Gray II shows the reader the ins and outs of TextMate, and teaches you how to get the most out of this great app.

'TextMate Power Editing for the Mac' is available now. The physical book costs $29.95, the PDF version costs $20, and you can grab both for $37.45.

I just bought this book off of Half.com for $12.99 + $3.25 shipping. Now where can I find the software cheaper than the $53.xx it's costing me direct from the developer?

Just learn VIM. It's everywhere, and I can't imagine being able to edit text more quickly using another program.

I used to be a vim only person but I bought TextMate last year. The price hurt but I love the expandability of this app. It only took me 8 months to stop littering everything I edited with :wq ;-).

(let's for get into The Holy War. Vi/Emacs/whatever, use what works for you.)

I'm a fan of TextMate for coding as well as writing, the number of built in snippets/bundles/etc. just makes life so much easier.

I used Emacs for over 20 years. I now use TextMate for 90% of my work. I use Emacs only for writing the books, because filladapt mode is unsurpassed.

But for everything else, I'm a TextMate convert. (The fact it has Emacs key bindings for the common stuff helps)

I would say it was a very expensive text editor, since TextMate was one of the main reasons I switched to Mac. (I now own a Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro) :-)
