TUAW Podcast #21 - the NetNewsWire 3 beta screencast

The TUAW Podcast is upon us, and for #21 I decided on a screencast of that NetNewsWire 3 beta sneak peek released a couple weeks ago. The new version is a slick piece of work with a lot of nice new features, and I go over all the good stuff in just under 8 minutes. This H264/AAC podcast weighs in at 800 x 450 and 42MB, and can be had from our iTunes Store Podcast directory, this direct link or our own podcast rss feed. Enjoy!
P.S. - don't forget to digg us in the digg podcast directory as well!
[Update: It seems we had some problems with properly linking the podcast directly and for the iTS, but things should be good to go now. The direct link is now working, and our iTS podcast directory should refresh at least within an hour or two, but likely within 30 minutes.]

I have to say I'm not a big fan of the decision to lose tabs and use these live preview thingies on the right. They take up valuable screen space and frankly I don't really care of the preview, I usually have only one or two open anyway. I would like to have an option to switch back to normal tabs please.

Ok so it seems you have a problem with the server. It says the file does not exist. Same throug iTunes.

#2: nevrozel, looks like it just took things a little while to catch up. I can get the 'cast via the direct link and I see it in our iTS podcast feed as well. It seems that even computers can be groggy this early in the morning. :)

I'm not a NNW user (I use FeedDemon on Windows), but I watched the screencast to see how it compared, should I ever make that switch.
I think I saw a bug in the screencast at approximately 3:38. You switched back to Traditional View, but the three view-buttons at the top of the window continued to have Combined View selected.

#4: Good eyes. ;) Yea, that's why Brent often stresses that with the NNW beta, he really means *beta.* As far as the core functionality, I think it works well and have been using it since early January.

is there any way for me to test this out while keeping my current nnw app installed? the sneak peek version has the same app name so it wants to overwrite my copy....??

#6: There are a couple ways to handle this. First, OS X doesn't care where you store *most* apps, so you could keep this beta copy on the desktop or in another folder to avoid overwriting your current copy of 1.x or 2.x. The second, and more important, thing to worry about, however, is the folder that NetNewsWire stores all your feeds in. The version 3 beta has a new storage system, so it's more important that you make a backup of your current NetNewsWire support folder to go back to if you ever want to stop using version 3.
It's pretty simple: all you need to do is go to ~/Library/Application Support and find the NetNewsWire folder (~ is your Home folder). There are plenty of ways to back up that folder, but simply clicking on the NNW folder and pressing cmd-d will duplicate it (giving you a new folder called "NetNewsWire Copy"). Now, you can safely run the version 3 beta, and if you ever want to roll back to the current version, simply remove the "NetNewsWire" folder from Application Support, and rename the "NetNewsWire Copy" back to its original name so your version 2 copy can run properly.
Of course, there's at least one catch with this: any changes you make to your subscriptions in NNW 3, like adding, moving or deleting them, won't be reflected in version 2 since you're swapping out those two app support folders.
Make sense?

Interesting podcast. I think I'll stick with NewsFire for now, but NetNewsWire is looking better and better, especially since Dave Watanabe hasn't updated NewsFire in about six months. Maybe sometime in the future I'll make the switch.
And... "that's the way I roll" haha
