Groupcal 3 updated

Snerdware last week updated the iCal/Exchange middleware package Groupcal to version 3.80, adding one-way file sync to the feature list, among other enhancements. For Mac users in MS Exchange shops, the combination of Groupcal/iCal for calendaring, Mail for email, and Snerdware's AddressX for Global Address List sync provide a workable alternative to Entourage 2004's PIM functionality.

Groupcal licenses start at $55 with aggressive volume licensing available. Meanwhile, I'd better look for some products that don't have a duck in their logo...

I haven't tried 3.8 but I've had problems with time zones shifting from what I had intended. So I can't use invitation feature in MS Outlook / iCal-GroupCal. However, I have no problem when other people (e.g., my secretary) adds my schedule directly via MS Outlook. So it is not a perfect alternative to Entourage's calendaring feature, but it is still good enough for me to trash Entourage.

I (along with the other 3 co-workers who tried to use GroupCal) have had nothing but problems with this software. I do own a license (unfortunately), so I might as well give this new version a try, but every past version I've tried has only managed to sync part of my calendar. Having it randomly drop meetings from iCal is even less useful to me than having it sync none at all.

This product is great, please try it out if your company uses Outlook and you are forced to do so. This provided an excellent mobile solution for me, as I now import my Outlook calendar from work right into iCal, then I can sync iCal to my mobile via Missing Sync.

And this will be a great tool for upcoming iPhone users who need access to their work calendar and mail in Outlook. Same process as I use, except one less step since iCal will sync directly into the iPhone.
