It was only a few days ago that I had occasion to use the original
iPod Shuffle Reset utility, rescuing a colleague's first-gen "Wrigley's" model Shuffle from a fugue state. Now the second-gen "tieclip" Shuffles can also be brought back from the brink: on Thursday, Apple released
iPod Reset Utility 1.0 for both
OS X and
Windows XP/2000. This tool will force-initialize a Shuffle that doesn't respond to the usual
5 R's diagnostic. If you've got a stalled Shuffle, try this out and let us know how it goes.

Since when did shuffles get these corny nicknames?

Jonathan: Blogetic license. You may call them whatever you like, but I can't help thinking of sticks of gum when I see 1st gen shuffles.

is there one of these for regular ipods? my mini has been making little sad ipod faces at me since that one fateful night I charged it by plugging it into the wall socket a couple of months ago.

Hey ella - Looks like you may have a hardware issue at work, as described at the "iPod displays a sad iPod icon" page. You can try to restore the mini via iTunes, but if that doesn't work, it appears you'll need to set up a service request
BTW: If anyone has problems with their iPod, start at the iPod service page, to find solutions or next steps to be taken.

I've had a dead 1.gen laying around for months, but I never knew there was a utility to fix it. Gotta get home fast now and check this out!
