rex remote from Sik
All currently shipping Macs (with the exception of the Xserve) come with an Apple Remote free of charge! What a deal. As you know the tiny white Apple Remote lets you control Front Row, and when coupled with some third party apps lets you do even more.Sik looked at the Apple Remote and thought, 'Sure that's cool, but what if you could store that remote in an ExpressCard slot, like those found on the MacBook Pro?' Hence the birth of Rex, a replacement for the Apple Remote that is capable of doing everything the Apple Remote does, and can be stowed in your MacBook Pro's ExpressCard slot.
The remote is $26.

It'd be better if it was white....

Maybe Apple should have thought of this originally, since so few people have found a use for that expresscard slot.

And with the exception of Mac Pros. They don't come with Apple remotes.

I wish Apple had built in a slot (specifically) for the remote in the first place.
I really like the idea of being able to store it in my laptop...not so keen that it would take up the only expresscard slot.

I had one, I loved it, for what it was.

HP have been doing the same thing with a nicely made remote for some time now.

For those of us chumps with old-fashioned PCMCIA slots, there's the PCPAL 3-in-1 Slim PC/Laptop RF Remote Control, Mouse, and Laser Presenter

The Apple Remote is an option on the low-end 17" iMac. I set one up for a client last week and was amazed at the lack of a remote. Sure enough, doing a CTO for the 17" iMac on the Apple website showed that it doesn't come with a remote and you need to pay an additional $29 to get one!

you apple people have a weird concept of "free vs. included in the price tag". i found the same kind of reasoning with apple's 2$ scam about the 802.11n wi-fi card in the new macbook pros.
the apple remote isn't free, i paid for it when i shelled 1999€ for my macbook pro (which, btw, in the first month developed a burned-out pixel and a heat warped case).
the same is true for the 802.11n, someone on the cult of mac blog pointed out that i shouldn't complain about getting a 802.11n card for just 2$.
well, actually, i ALREADY paid that card, as the difference between a 802.11g and a 802.11n is already factored in the final price tag.
otherwise you could start to think as "free hard-disks" or "free video cards" since, you know, they're in the package but nobody's charging directly for it.
