Ten more reasons to get a Mac

It may be hard to believe but not everyone who reads TUAW owns a Mac (shocking, I know). Lots of our readers are Windows users making their first tentative steps towards computing nirvana and we here at TUAW want to help. Today's ten reasons to get a Mac come from that bastion of tech journalism, the Register. Some of the points made are very good (fast wake up from sleep, target disk mode) and others are just silly, however, it is both entertaining and informative for someone on the fence.

@ 5 (Sam) - The new white MacBook cases scratch HORRIBLY and much worse than the iBooks. I keep mine in a sleeve and it's still covered in horrible scratches. The black MacBook cases do well though.
The MacBook is my work laptop though ;) I replaced it with a MacBook Pro of my own. No scratches there!! Although some of the paint is coming off.
OK...
1. MacBooks are plastic. This cool MacBook I have sitting on my desk with a cracked screen, unbootable system. Not a reason to switch to Mac.
2. Comedy duo. Funny. I like most Get-a-Mac commercials.
3. TDM (target disk mode) cool. Great feature.
4. Smart phones. does anybody really do this?
5. Intel inside... It's funny they now call this a strong point. 2 years ago it was an abomination. But it IS a strong point.
6. Bundled apps. iLife: hate it. Many novice users might love it. Games: chess. Others? nope. If you want to play games don't buy a mac. There's not much out there. WoW, few other titles
7. Sleeping/Waking. fast. (Windows does this, too!)
8. GUI. I'm not impressed with Mac's GUI. It really isn't as pretty as Windows Vista. Mac users hate that Microsoft looks better. Who cares who got there first. And Finder is icky (an important part of the GUI)
9. Windows on a Mac. The best OS w/ some great hardware.
10. You want to be smug on a Windows machine? Buy Alienware. Apple doesn't offer too many $5600 laptops. Although you don't get that APL FNBY license plate with Alienware.
I don't own a Mac - yet, though I've frequently used them and parents own them, plus I've converted numerous others to them... Kind of hypocritical, but my next laptop will be a Mac, just waiting for this one to break!

March 22 2007 at 9:22 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe point that's made about the PowerBook case also somewhat applies to the plastic iBook/MacBooks - the case is very tough and hard-wearing, looks nice and doesn't seem to scratch, and unlike on most PC laptops you'd definitely notice a scratch on such a nice-looking case!
That and sleeping - I've not yet come across a Windows PC more than a year or two old that will wake from standby properly all the time, ironically laptops seem to have more problems than desktops, for some reason. Yet my own MacBook and iMac G3 wake from sleep reliably, *every single time* - also my flatmate has an iBook, a classmate a PowerBook, and I've never heard of them having any problems either.
Not that the standby issues are necessarily a problem with Windows, or PCs for that matter - it's just that Apple make both the hardware and software for their machines, which means that things requiring good hardware and software support can be expected to be tested and work. Sleep certainly does, and well.

I'm ready to make the jump, just as soon as Leopard comes out. Get your finger out, Apple.

Nice.
Hey, some of us are long-time Mac users cruelly forced to live the Windows life for years, and are gradually taking steps to return to the fold.
We read TUAW to stay current, so that when we return to our computing platform of choice, we'll be able to hit the ground running.
I am Windows user. Stil. But I have been staying tuned here for more than 2 months. But after my graduation (this summer) I will switch to Mac.
Thank you, TUAW.
