I've been using Vista since "Beta 2" and have had no problems with my Ipod or any USB devices. Vista Beta 2 did make some of my files vanish after moving them to new drive or folders but I've had no problems with my 4G Ipod or Itunes.

When I was on XP with my iPod, I always used iTunes to eject and completely ignored the "Finding New Hardware" garbage. But then, I don't have a dock and if I'm not updating (which requires iTunes), I only charge using a wall socket.
