Forgedit: tabbed text editor

We posted a while back about the introduction of tabs into SubEthaEdit. I recently ran across another text editor that offers tabs called ForgEdit, which bills itself as the "programmers text editor for OS X." It seems to be a rather straightforward app with some decent, if not terribly innovative, features, such as customizable key bindings and a file drawer. I don't think it's going to make me give up TextMate, but if you're looking for an editor with tabs it's probably worth a look.
ForgEdit is a free download while in beta, but will be $20 once it's released.

Is it "Forge Edit" or "Forget It?" :D

One note: TextMate has tabs too, if you have a project or folder open.

If you're looking for a free RTF/HTML/DOC editor with tabs (actually a nice sidebar), there's WriteInOne-

Back in my windows days I used Textpad which had tabs, but I use BBEdit now with the file drawer, I don't really have a need for tabs. It seems like just another implementation of the same basic principle.

As a switcher, the app I miss most on Windows is UltraEdit. I have been using skEdit on my Mac and enjoying it for the most part.
I wrote to IDM (makers of UltraEdit) to ask them if they were ever going to port to OS X and I got a response:
"There is not currently a Linux/MAC version
available however we are actively scheduling for this for a future release. The date of availability for this is yet to be determined."
So it sounds like it is something they are headed towards eventually :)

When you're competing with something like TextMate, you have to do better than make your app look like TextMate

TextWrangler doesn't technically have tabs, but it does have a single-window interface with all open documents accessible via a sidebar (more a-la Omniweb than Safari, for example).
I like TextWrangler. A lot.

As a student, I'd really really like it if NeoOffice or Microsoft 2008 (due soon, right?) had tabs. When writing papers I've got my paper open, the outline/notes for it open, probably my class syllabus, and possibly an .doc format article or two. This is in addition to god-knows how many pdf journal articles or tabs in firefox.
Be nice if all those .docs could be in a tabbed window...

" As a switcher, the app I miss most on Windows is UltraEdit."
I was just like you, a long time UltraEdit user (actually bought the lifetime upgrade option they had). When I moved to Mac I missed UltraEdit. Then I discovered TextMate, and now I miss TextMate on Windows.
TextMate is a bit different, and it appears to not do much at first, but that is very deceiving. Once you learn it, other editors seem old and cluncky.
The good news is I see many editors now copying TextMate's ideas; with some out and out copies of TextMate (E Editor on Windows). So no matter what editor you like, it will probably be getting some of TextMate's features eventually.
