Can you think of a better way to start the weekend than with a nice set of photos of a burnt and melted iPod? Nope, we couldn't either. This set of destroyed iPod images is brought to you courtesy of Digg, where the submitter writes that the iPod exploded while charging "in a shower of sparks and smoke". Journalists say "if it bleeds, it leads". TUAW says if it goes boom, there's room. Or something like that. Enjoy the photos.

what a lame post. maybe if it had burnt down a house or started a battery recall this would be worthy of attention.

This is the second time this week I have been saddened by what I see here. Most of your stories originate on Digg these days. Why do I keep subscribing to you and Digg....?

amazing that no one was hurt in this. i remember the story of a dog saving his owner from being shocked from underground transformers on a Boston sidewalk. In an effort to retard or suppress injury from exploding ipods, Apple will launch the iDog later this year.

Why the hell was he charging it in the shower, let alone a shower of smoke and sparks? These things are neither waterproof nor smoke proof nor spark proof! The battery should only be charged in a dry environment free of billowing smoke clouds that rain down sparks. Says it right in the manual.

#7: He was not charging it in the shower. It was a shower of sparks. It’s a metaphor. Get with it.

It looks like the charging system either failed, was damaged or was defeated. LiON batteries have a specific limit to which it allows charged. If it's overcharged by 1% then it's at risk of exploding. Good battery modules have charge limiters preventing this from happening, though some third party replacement modules might not have this important circuitry.
