Griffin previews the Amplifi

Now that you can get 256kbps, DRM-free music from iTunes (well, in May, anyway) you're going to want to hear what that extra $0.30US buys you. You could pick up an iPod HiFi for $350US, or wait a bit for the Amplifi by Griffin Technology.

The Amplifi is a 2.1 sound system for all iPod models (it accommodates other players as well) that features a wooden case and bass reflex port plus two 2-3/4" neodymium drivers on the front and one 5" woofer underneath. It also features standard audio in and a remote. Check out this video of our very own Scott McNulty talking Amplifi with the Griffin folks at Macworld for some first hand impressions.

Now for the million dollar question...what's it going to cost? The iPod HiFi's price tag has successfully kept many shoppers away, and no information is currently available on the Amplifi's cost or shipping date. If it's more moderately priced than the HiFi, it could be a winner.

I work at London Drugs in Canada(I think the largest Apple retailer in Canada? Anyone?), and we have had this item for probably a week or so. It was retailed at 199 canadian, if I remember correctly. Not at work now, but will check and post later.

The sound was very decent for the price. We have an Apple HiFi right beside it and playing the same song, the Apple was way more realistic and had quite a bit more volume. But almost twice the price. I had an iPod in it and the EQ was set at More Bass, and the thing was all distorted, but after I turned it off was alot better. But stil not even as close to the Apple HiFi. But all in all really good small speaker for the price..

or you could go to Costco and get the XtremeMac Tango for $89 that's pretty much the same thing, except it's made of shiny white plastic instead of wood, but it sounds fine to me.

the only thing I dislike is its tendency to go into standby mode during quiet passages in the music when running through the analog connection to my Macbook. I don't use it with my iPods much but that sounds fine too, and the bass is kick-ass.

Now for the million dollar question...what's it going to cost?

No, with Griffin the million dollar question is always "When (if ever) is it going to ship?"

I'm one of the poor schlubs who has pre-ordered from Griffin in the past. They are horrible, they change the shipping dates without informing you. When I raised to them (through the BBB) that they should maybe you know...keep their customers informed of the their the new shipping date. I simple and moderate adjustment to their order process. Their response was exceedingly rude, the acted as if the only option would be to end pre-orders altogether.
