Apple TV Commercial spotted in the wild
A big thank you to everyone who has written in, tipping us off about this new Apple TV commercial that just aired today on US television. "It's on your computer. It's on your iPod. Now, it's on your TV."
I'm not positive which movie they're using--is it "School of Rock"? SoR is on my to-watch list but I've never gotten around to seeing it yet.
As for the commercial itself, it's very on-message. It speaks directly to its core constituency. AppleTV is for the iTunes/iPod audience. It expands the way they use the media they already own. And hopefully it will serve the better-quality media we're expecting an announcement for at NAB 2007.

I would not call DivX an esoteric format. There may be more DivX encoded files than any other type of video file.

The camera will go from the bedroom to the iPod to the living room and then to the garage.
We will see Apple's new in-dash CarPod.

Nate W, you forgot to include the line "Dude, you got a disease" :P

Rather than pitching "wooooo!!! you can watch the same movie on a Mac, iPod, and television," Apple should have emphasized AppleTV's ability to stream all the different types of digital content from iTunes. The AD could have captured the essence of the product and done more - like show clips of the navigation, and really highlight the features to portray AppleTV as a revolutionary product... Apple used to be very good at this. I remember watching their reel for Final Cut Studio, and being captivated by how comprehensive and dynamic the animation/storyboard was.
The current AD doesn't give any enticing selling points other than what people already know - AppleTV can play movies.
I agree with Dan and the others who like this ad. It's very good at illustrating the concept in a way that makes it simple to understand: movie on your computer => same movie on your ipod => Now watch the same movie on your TV!
I also like the way the camera moves from the office through the house, and to the living room. Sort of symbolic that Apple has now arrived in your living room, and their here to stay (and you're gonna like it)!
Nate - thanks for the laugh to start the day. Great line.
I'd like to point out that everyone reading TUAW has already bought an AppleTV, is planning to buy one, or has decided not to buy one. We've all seen the interface, learned about the hacks, etcetera, etcetera.
This commercial is aimed at people that don't KNOW that you can play this stuff on a TV. Believe it or not, most people don't even know that it's possible to move stuff from the computer to the TV. They're thinking, "I can watch my iPod movies/shows at home on my TV? Cool!" This is totally new info to them, so a concept piece would not be helpful.
The folks at Apple/Chiat have done their research. They've tested the commercials. They have a lot of data to back up their million dollar ad budgets. They don't just guess what people want to know and what will sell - they know.
It does amuse me that despite Apple's astronomical marketing success, we geeks still feel the need to nitpick their commercials and pretend we could do better.
"Alright, I'm hung over. Does anyone know what that means?"
"It means you're drunk."
"Wrong, it means i was drunk yesterday."
"It means you're an alcoholic, only alcoholics come to work hung over."
"...What's your name?"
"Freddy Jones"
"Freddy Jones...SHUT UP"
I don't really think they should have used a theatrical released movie, it should have been a home movie or something made with iMovie/iPhoto.
As for being a compelling ad, I thought it was 'okay'. but they've done better. Of course, I didn't like the "Switch", "iPod dancers" or the "I'm 'Mac" ads, but they're proved to be pretty popular....
lol... look at the HD version... the Apple TV has only the power chord connected... it's magically broadcasting video over the air!!
