A big thank you to everyone who has written in, tipping us off about this new Apple TV commercial that just aired today on US television. "It's on your computer. It's on your iPod. Now, it's on your TV."
I'm not positive which movie they're using--is it "School of Rock"? SoR is on my to-watch list but I've never gotten around to seeing it yet.
As for the commercial itself, it's very on-message. It speaks directly to its core constituency. AppleTV is for the iTunes/iPod audience. It expands the way they use the media they already own. And hopefully it will serve the better-quality media we're expecting an announcement for at NAB 2007.

This is going to sound stupid, but what is the song that they are playing? I can't for the life of me remember what it is.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think it's the SAME HOUSE that was used in the very FIRST iPod commercial.
Look for yourself...

Glad to see Apple TV commercials .. on TV. :) But .. this comes across as a pretty dumb ad. Movies, "now, on your TV". Woo. Movies on the TV set. How novel. :p Way to sell it, Apple.

Sucks. TBWA\Chiat\Day is losing its creative touch. Apple should've invested in an AD agency that could come up with a more mind-blowing and engaging concept.

I think #6 and #12 are right. Apple has a reputation of being innovative with their industrial design, their lifestyle products, their software AND their advertising. This certainly falls short of innovative: visually it's not as sophisticated or interesting as the Cingular "Seamless" spot ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHBSH3_zwZI ), and conceptually not nearly as smart as the "I'm a Mac" ads or compelling as the iPod spots that have been running for years. And that's the biggest problem...it's really not compelling. It doesn't leave me with a "gotta have it" feeling at all. In response to #6, I'm pretty sure that the point they're trying to make is that the MEDIA that's on your Mac and iPod can now be viewed on your TV. But it still leaves me wanting to say "duh...and?". Come on...sell this thing to me! The spot actually makes me less interested in Mac TV than I was before I saw it.

I agree with Dave's take on things.
This is not an exciting ad at all. It doesn't get me up and out the door wanting to buy one. If I didn't know better, I'd think that maybe i can only watch the movie on the tv at the same time as watching it on the computer [as if it were just a box to stream the picture from the computer to the tv monitor]. Not a compelling ad in the slightest.
also, re: "Let's see you make your own ad, Mr. Marketing Expert." Mr Pastor, you're an idiot.

It is not the most innovative ad they have ever done (understatement), but it does get the point across to those people who do not read TUAW but own an iPod. If you look at the first iPod ad, it uses a similar approach.
Once the world gets informed of what appleTV is, I then expect we will see more 'style' ads to burn it into our brains.

This advert explains exactly what the AppleTV is for -- putting videos what you would watch on your iPod onto a TV set.
I hope the Slashdot crowd remembers that when they complain that it can't play DivX, ogg, or some other esoteric format.
