Do your taxes (US) with your Mac

Here's one for our readers in North America. As of this writing, you've got six days to pay your dues to Uncle Sam. You know how the saying goes, "There only two things you must do in this life: Die and pay your taxes." Since there's no avoiding it (unless you think prison sounds like fun), then you might as well make the process somewhat pleasant by using your Mac.

There's a great article at Macinstruct all about filing with your Mac. They compare apps like TurboTax, TaxCut and TaxAct (both the boxed and unboxed versions) and explain how to apply for an extension - all with your Mac.

I tried the H&R product. I got maybe 5 or so steps and it would not let me continue.

I used TaxAct, for free, and it was great. I think I found my new tax program/site. It worked perfectly on my iBook on Safari 1.3.2 It even let me see the instantaneous effects of what I was doing it whne I was doing it. It also was the only one I saw, free ones I tried, that let you enter HSA information and expenditures.

Don't trust the on-line versions, tax forms have critical personal information! TaxCut for Mac was free if you read dealnews: http://dealnews.com/search.html?search=taxcut&x=0&y=0

The download process required MS IE, chuckle, cough.

Man, 0.1 sec to google search to find the correct quote... "Nothing is certain but death and taxes."

I used TurboTax this year and it was painless and flawless. eFiled and return check was in hand in 9 business days.

If you're going to eFile (and why wouldn't you?), then TaxCut is MUCH cheaper than TurboTax. (Just be sure to purchase the eFile version up front...don't go for the cheapest version then add eFile after the fact...it ends up more expensive.)

I had no problems at all with TaxCut, and even thought the help files were fairly helpful. Plus, you get one free phone call to an H&R Block tax consultant who will answer any tax questions you have while you're filling out your return.

Just do it for free online. Duh!

Or just fill it out yourself and mail it in. It really isn't that hard if you're single and don't own a lot of property.
