Kate Milon posted about another possible iPod in Space on her personal weblog. According to an email she received from a NASA engineer, astronauts may take small personal items with them on shuttle flights. Pilot Lee Archambault has chosen his 0.55 ounce iPod shuffle, says the letter, and it may require a high-altitude modified case for the player to work. This wouldn't be the first SpacePod that we have covered here (here, and here). And if you are more interested in Space on your iPod than iPods in Space, check out these NASA podcasts.

Why would an astronaut in the pressurized environment of the space shuttle need a special "high-altitude case" for his/her iPod?

Fake reason: Because the Steve said a $99 silk-lined, Italian leather case will be required to withstand the extreme conditions of space.
Real reason: bragging rights!

I remember an article a long time ago on the topic of manufactured goods in space. Products release all manner of gaseous crud into the air (ever notice how a new car gets that filmy crud inside the windows no matter what you do?). On earth it's not a big deal because the stuff is diluted by the vast amounts of air down here. In space you have a closed system and if everything outgassed you get all that junk settling out in places like life-support systems, electronics, experiments, and windows wreaking havoc. To prevent this they have to use special materials, or somehow contain the contaminants.
Under lower pressure the outgassing process would be accelerated making the problem worse.
