You know what that feeling in the air is? That's right! Apple has released a new security update. Security Update 2007-004. It seems to fix a slew of things, so I would suggest installing it as soon as possible. It is available for 10.3.9 server, 10.3.9 client, PPC, and Universal flavors.

You mean 10.4.9, right?

It's worth noting that the update requires two restarts (I'm running Mac OS X 10.4 on an Intel-based machine)!

I would never suggest updating your Mac as soon as possible, always wait a few days and check sites like xlr8yourmac before updating the system.

No, it's 10.3.9. Apple releases updates for security issues for previous OS X versions as well.

Installed it on two Power PC iMacs (G4 and G5) with no trouble. Only required one restart.

I have successfully installed the update on my MacBook. Just like John Hood mentioned, my Intel required 2 restarts.

(Power PC, iBook) After the restart the F keys were unable to control hardware features and the Apple menu was kinda frozen. After some voodoo like maintenance (periodic, etc 'i hope it helps' attitude) and a restart from terminal, it's all back to normal.

G5 iMac, 1 restart and no problems.
G4 mini, 1 restart and no dock. Restarted again via the terminal (called up via quicksilver) as nothing else would work and everything is back to normal.

On 10.4.8 (recently downgraded from 10.4.9) this doesn't show up in Software Update. Has anyone else seen it yet?
Also, the restarts would suggest a firmware update of sorts. Could someone with an Intel iMac please post their firmware versions?
Mine currently are:
Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
SMC Version: 1.1f5

The update nearly killed my mac, and i would recommend people wait a while before running this update. and run Onyx before and after the update

I thought this update bricked my work Intel Mac mini...restarted once, then restarted again, and just SAT there. For at least 15 minutes with a blank darker-blue screen.
Finally had to hold the power button to restart & sent error report to Apple.
No problems updating my G4 iBook, just one restart.

I haven't installed this update yet, but based on past experience I would just say one thing to anyone installing it and that is LEAVE YOUR MAC ALONE WHILE YOU RUN SYSTEM UPDATES!
You know you'll have to restart anyway, so shut down your programs and run the update before going to make a drink or something.

There is a possibility that it made QuarkXPress 6.x utterly useless (well, more utterly useless than normal). I posted a thread in Quark tech support forums ... we'll see what happens.
