Mac 101: Remove unwanted menu extras
Sure, those little icon utility menus on the right side of the screen -- displays, sound, Airport, etc. -- are handy, but do I really need the Displays icon there for a desktop screen that never changes size, or the Modem icon when I've got broadband? While you can deactivate most of these through a parent application or System Preferences, there's a quicker way: simply hold down the Command (Apple) key and drag the offender out of the menu bar and onto a blank area of the Desktop. Poof! No more icon.

Hi ,
No one knows how to remove menu extra from the menu extra bar using cocoa API.
Is there no one API to remove the our created menu extra. If any one knows please reply how to remove our menu extras.
Thanks so much for posting this tip!! Really helpful! Did a search in google on "remove modem icon from menu bar" and this discussion came up first.
Had been "suffering" looking at the modem icon on my macbook for months. It got installed when I transferred everything from my old ibook during initial the set up.
I spent a lot time hunting around Systems Preferences trying to get rid of it. The solution of command-drag-drop-and-poof seems too easy.... Ha! Don't know if I would have ever guessed that one.
Thanks again!
How to remove menu extra?
By the other menu extra.
I have created one menu extra it working properly but i want to remove my menu extra by the another menu extra how can i do this ?
please help.
blair, the tip is actually correct. The utility icons mentioned in the post refer to OS X utilities. I've found it annoying that I cant move around my third party menubar apps around using this method, but that's what makes OS X so, so sweet.

April 24 2007 at 3:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhow do I remove or hide the entire menu bar? I'm working with FCP, Illustrator and Photoshop quite a bit, and that menubar is a pain. (Windows actually doesn't have it, I just found out).

April 24 2007 at 2:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't know about anyone else's Mac, but for me, it's COMMAND-SHIFT, not just the Command key. I'm on 10.4.9 if that makes a difference.
