Smultron: open source tabbed text editor hits version 3.0

It's true, I admit it, I have a bit of a thing for tabbed text editors (I'm seeking counseling). Anyway, I've discovered yet another one. Peter Borg (who is also behind the very cool Lingon launchd utility) has just released version 3 of his Smultron open-source text editor (with vertical tabs). This update improves a lot of things, including project management, application speed, memory usage, and not least of all, the interface (the tabs themselves are not new). Though I won't be dropping TextMate anytime soon, Smultron definitely looks like an interesting entry in the free text editor sweepstakes.
Smultron is a free download from sourceforge.

It's too bad it now has an ugly icon.

Okay, I'm as much about how things look visually as the next Mac guy...but lately I've seen comments both on Smultron and Handbrake where people rail on the icons of these apps.
What's the deal? I'm usually too busy using an app to care what the icon looks like. Plus, I happen to like the Handbrake pineapple drink thing even though it makes absolutely no sense.

Sometimes I wonder if some Mac users only get software that makes their dock look good via a nice icon. Nevermind how good or bad the product is.
Can anyone compare this app to Textmate, BBEdit, and others?

actually it does make sense sorta... it's encouraging you to go grab yourself a nice cold one while your video is encoding :)

One of the things I like about TextMate is the file navigation drawer, which allows me to easily navigate through all files in a certain folder hierarchy. Does anybody know whether Smultron (or perhaps another free editor) supports a similar feature?
