Bring 'My Computer' to Mac OS X's desktop

Filed under: OS, Software, Productivity, Mods

Use Spotlight as a reference tool. Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.

thank goodness for this. all i need now is a Start menu. and a registry that gets corrupted. and DOS. and viruses and spyware. and regular crashes. then i'll truly feel at home on a Mac.

Forgive the negativity, but that's the most useless application I've seen in quite some time. Click on the Finder in the Dock and you get a new Finder window, and, look at that, there's all your mounted volumes in the left pane.

If you really want, you can enable "Computer" on the sidebar in finder window, and hide those drives on the desktop, what's so different about this app.

what a useless application...
Nothing worse that PC switchers that whine about you can do it that way in windows.
why on earth people can't just move on is completely beyond me..
If its that painful then go back to windows.
yawn.

I dont' usually agree with the negativ posters on TUAW, but I have to agree this is pretty pointless. Starting in Computer/My Computer folder is pretty pointless place to start, but if you can easily mimic that effect by using Finder => Preferences to change the default folder from Home to => Computer.
Also, there are few tricks that swtichers should be taking with them from Windows, but starting at Computer before trudging there way through the system folders isn't one of them.
That said, I really do like the Mac 101 posts. I would like to see more of them that really showcases Tiger's ability to streamline processes.
I've personally got 8 people to switch since Apple went Intel and many of them frequent this site as much as I do.
Things i think switcher could benefit from:
- Spotlight from quick access to applications
- Exposé for quickly switching between many apps (Even the ability to keep many apps open, it/s amazing how many Windows users will close out one app before opening another app.
- Why closing a window doesn't (usually) close the program like it does with Windows.
- The benefits of Adium.
- How to change icons.
- Print screen (this skill seems pointless, but when troubleshooting switchers, having them sen my screenshots is a big help).
- The beauty of Dictionary.app and the leyboard shortcut to activate it (I changed mine to F12 so it's a toggle key. The dictionary moves to whatever word my mouse is hovering over).

I know the idea of these things is to help switchers be more comfortable, but I agree that this one in particular seems pointless. If you don't like the way the Mac OS works, maybe you just shouldn't switch. I know that Apple needs switchers, and I am one myself (a year ago), but when I got my iBook and started using it I felt like I finally had a computer that made sense, not like I needed to hurry up and make it as ugly and confusing as my Windows desktop.

I have to agree. This is completely useless.

Guys: believe it or not, some people work differently than you do. They might have habits that differ from yours, or ways that they think about their computing environment that differ from yours. Maybe they have 6 hard drives connected for various kinds of work they do. Maybe they aren't even a switcher, but are just a neat freak who hates seeing a lot of extra drives on the desktop.
Maybe they're just plain different.

This is actually a pretty classy way of organizing your desktop.

As someone with eight drive icons on my desktop when I'm attached to my firewire storage, I can see how this is useful. However, I would not be calling it "My Computer".

Gosh, first time I read the comments. I'm used to friendlier blogs. I thought I'd post some constructive criticism. I disabled drive icons on my desktop, but set my default Finder window (Finder Preferences) to "Computer". Why use a new app when you can just click on the Finder icon in the dock and have the same effect?

crsp, the unfriendliness only comes from the haters. Before they came, the comments were very friendly and informative. Once the haters leave (please let it be soon), the comments will again be mostly friendly and informative.
pathetik, what exactly are you criticising Erica for? This article was written by David! Has Erica-bashing really reached the farcical level of criticising her for other people's writing?

How do you get to see the resolution under a icon like on the picture shown above (picture3.png)?
