Slippery or not? The great iPhone slipperiness debate

Is the iPhone slippery? Will it drop out of your hands during use, crashing to the floor below and destroying your expensive purchase? That's the question raised over on Digg, which linked up this story about slippery iPhones. The story quotes Alexandrous Roussos, who wrote "the material used on the device's case makes it feel even more slippery than the iPod and will probably require the purchase of a protective skin or case so as to avoid unintentionally dropping it".

Immediately the blogosphere split into two factions, debating whether the iPhone was in fact slippery or not. MyiPhone's Chris Barr writes that according to Brian Lam, an actual iPhone holder and toucher, the iPhone is not slippery at all. Wired reports that the iPhone might slip out of your hand.

Me? If I get an iPhone, I'm buying a case for it--just like I bought one for my iPod and my cell phone.

Just wanted to say that Gap has in stores their new line of leather iPod accessories and one is definitely an iPhone holder. It has a full length clear vinyl front with a belt clip. There is a specific iPod one with only vinyl over the screen to allow for wheel access.

Have no clue how slippery it is since I haven't held one in my hands. I suppose this depends on the user. Some people have slippery palms while others do not. If I get an iPhone I'll definately get a protective case for it since I'm in the habit of dropping things once in a great while and as you point out it is rather an expensive item to just destroy in one slip of the hand.

C'mon Apple is that bad at designing consumer products that it would pick a material so slick that it would fly out of your hands? This makes no sense at all. Why is this a story? If you believe this junk, I have some real cheap swampland in Florida that I am sure you'd be interested in.

Personally, I recommend enclosing it in a perspex case, placing it on a pedestal, and then gazing upon it adoringly.

After doing this, buy yourself another one for everyday use.

Slippery or not can be determined by the individual, because some poeple have high moisture on their hands. Drier hands tend have items slip out of them; while, moist hands not tend to not have this problem.

Seriously? This is what Apple fans and detractors are arguing about?
Come on. This is just stupid.

I'm glad to see that the ability to run Windows on Macs has appropriately stunted intellectual thought on this blog.

This is the wrong question. Whether or not the iPhone is slippery, people are going to drop it, because that's what happens to cellphones. The real question is, how durable is the iPhone? What happens if you do drop it?

well, DUH -- of *course* i'm going to get a case for it, regardless of whether it's "slippery" or not. that's just being a conscious consumer. even my current crappy phone has a case, and i absolutely bought one for my ipod when i got it. people will try ANYthing to tear down the iphone, and they've never even held one in their hands yet. dorks.
