0xED Cocoa Hex editor
Last year I had occasion to use a Hex editor for getting at the insides of a binary and the only one I could find for the Mac was the PPC-only HexEdit. So I was pleased today to discover 0xED, a free Universal Binary, Cocoa native hex editor. One particularly nice feature is the plugin architecture that allows users "easily [to] write plug-ins to display and edit... custom data types." I do have to agree with FreeMacWare, however, that the name needs rethinking.0xED is a free download from Suavetech.

Rethinking of the name? That's the best name for a Hex Editor I ever heard!
I've got one at worked called Hexed.

You always have Hexfiend: http://ridiculousfish.com/hexfiend/
I think it's nicer than any of these two ;)

Dunno if this is old news, but the following Apple page:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/
has Leopard coming October 07. First official date I've seen.

I really like the name, I have no idea what you guys are talking about. 0xED! It has a nice...ring to it
*totally not sarcastic, I actually like the name*

Awesome. It is a great editor, and the value display (with extensible plug-in architecture) is an excellent idea.
I like the name. The initial zero means it sits right at the top of my application list where it is easy to find. The pre-MacTheRipper DVD ripping programme 0SEx also had an initial zero. In this case, the "hex identifier" - 0x - is ideal to have in the name. 0xED = hex ed = hex editor. I like it.

Raise your hand if you'll be using this tool for non piracy related activities?
Anyone?? Anyone?? Bueller?

*raises hand*. If you work with any sort of binary file (which you will, as a sysadmin), you will need to have a hex editor.
I've been using 0xED for a while. And no, the name does not need rethinking :P It's the best name for a hex editor out there.

Love the 0xED name, but I still like Hex Fiend better as an editor. (I don't use a hex editor much, but when I do it's often on hundred-gig drive captures trying to find copies of the NTFS MFT or the FAT, so Hex Fiend's large-file smarts are wonderful.)

Agreed -- HexFiend ( http://ridiculousfish.com/hexfiend/ ) is a better editor.
In my view, Free Open Source Software is much better than any closed proprietary app (even if the app is offered for free).

Count me in on the Hex Fiend fan list. You can judge this app by its icon!

IMHO, I would vote to stick with the 0xED name - clever moniker. And to jc: any developer working with binary files would find this app useful - I use it all of the time to analyze and troubleshoot binary data files. As for non-developers, well... Argh. I guess. BTW, I'll have to try out hex fiend - 0xED is a bit pokey with large files. THX for the tip!

What should we call it then? 0355? 237? Or perhaps 1101101? Though I'd hate to be caught in the situation of having to actually speak the name. So many possibilities! Not much chance in this online world I suppose. :-D
