Rumors: Contract-less iPhone for $899 and $999

I found this latest contract-free iPod pricing rumor over at TechnoJunkie. The poster there writes that he (or she) popped into a Cingular store the other day and chatted up some employees about the iPhone. The employees offered that non-Contract iPhones would sell for $899 (4 GB) and $999 (8 GB) compared to the expected $499 and $599 prices with 2 year contracts.

I find this hard to believe. Would a couple of bored Cingular store employees have the inside info about pricing and conditions so long before the actual product would go on sale? Probably just guessing and wasting time before the store got ready to close.

Cingular's early termination fee is $250 + $10 a month for every month on your contract remaining.

At least that's what it was when I was using them.

I also went to a Cingular store a few days ago, and a salesperson there tried to tell me I shouldn't get the iPhone, because the phone would be $1,200 without a plan, and that I could find a better phone for free. It's obvious no one at Cingular knows what they're talking about, and I really don't want to have to deal with them to get the iPhone. Sad isn't it? I think Apple would be better off being their own mobile service provider.

What is Cingular's current fee for early termination? Whatever that is plus $499 seems cheaper than the omg! no contract version. Regardless of what the actual price is ebay will have it for more and the people who really want one will have to wait until the speculators get bored. (or in my case until it's easily available and unlocked since cingular isn't in my area).

If Apple said the price was $499 & $599 and you will be able to buy them via Apple would it not follow that the price is as Apple said it would be? $499 & $599? I think the $899 & $999 price is hogwash contract or no contract.

I was just in my local Cingular store yesterday and the guy said they would be 'like $800' without a contract. Actual leaked Cingular employee instructions (on TUAW) > random cinguslob

As long as i can get one contract-free for under £500 (~$1000), I'm happy. But it does mean I'll be buying a MacBook instead of a MacBook Pro.
