iWay: an SD card reader for your iPod

The iWay is one of those products that generates more questions than it answers. It is advertised as a way to get photos onto your iPod (iPod photos, oddly, aren't supported) so you can showcase your pics on your iPod's screen. There is no mention of how one gets the photos off of the iPod, but you can move pictures from an SD card onto the iPod and then delete the contents of the SD card.
The iWay costs $69.95.

Assuming it integrates with iPod's Import Photos functionality, this seems to be more elegant solution than Apple's iPod Camera Connector (assuming you have SD-based camera). I have the iPod Camera Connector, which allows me to use both CF (via Canon Digital Rebel XTi) and SDHC (via Canon PowerShot SD800 IS), but it's annoying having to turn these cameras on in order to transfer images. The real question is how fast and whether it is compatible with newer SDHC cards.

$70? You've got to really be in love with SD to buy that. The Apple variant is only $30 and supports all media types - given that you must use your camera as the media reader. If they made an iWay that supported USB, like Apple's but much faster, then I could see spending more money on a photo transfer device. But not $70 for a single medium.

I too use Apple's iPod Camera Connector, and can transfer DIRECTLY from CF card to iPod using a USB CF card reader attached to the iPod Camera Connector. That way, the camera is not in the chain, and doesn't have to be powered on for transfers.
What I am looking for is a USB SD card reader that is compatible with Apple's iPod Camera Connector. Apple's iPod Camera Connector Compatibility list at http://www.apple.com/ipod/compatibility/cameraconnector.html lists only compatible cameras.

#3, which USB CF card reader do you use? Do you know whether it support high capacity memory cards? I've tried SanDisk and Sony (yes, Sony) but neither worked. I heard IOGear and Belkin make readers that work with iPod Camera Connector, but neither supports SDHC (and some do not even support 1 GB). If someone makes a multi card reader that works with iPod Camera Connector, while supporting latest standards like SDHC, I would get one.

It's "there," not "their." You're using the wrong word. Just thought I'd let you know. ;-)

In response to #4 above...The USB CF card reader I am using could be considered a "generic" brand, with no manufacturer listed on it. The only information printed on the bottom is:
USB Reader/Writer
P/N: FPTS-C
USGE2G07
Made in Taiwan
Sorry, but that's all I know about it, other than it reads CF cards into the Apple iPod Camera Connector, then to the 60 GB iPod Photo. I don't know if it will handle "high capacity" cards. The largest CF card I own is a 256MB. I don't use the CF card camera much now, and I've changed over to SD cards. Therefore...
...I'm looking for an SD to USB reader that will do the same.

Or you could use iPhoto and save yourself some iMoney. Apple has already given us this feature with the iPod itself. Why do we need to by redundant products. Don't we all have kids or hamsters to feed?

Will someone please just make an iCam?
=P
The photo thing on the iPod isn't too useful, but a camera for it? That would improve a lot.

#5 (Milo) you should try one of these: http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(1096)-SanDisk_Ultra_II_SD_Plus_Cards.aspx
USB is built-in so there's no need for a separate reader.

#13 & #14
Thanks for the suggestion, and that's what I plan on purchasing in the future, but what do I do with the five "plain-old" SD cards that I own now?
They are all SanDisk Ultra II. :-(

Number 13: I just bought one of these specifically to use with the ipod camera connector. It doesn't work, and just comes up with 'unsupoorted device'
A bit gutted really.

No Way for iWay. Price is much to high. INOi makes a multi card reader with a 20GB hard drive in it for $50 from http://www.geeks.com or $60 from http://www.NewEgg.com
