Reinventing the graphic novel--for iPod

Playlist magazine tells us that the graphic novel is being reinvented for the iPod. The Many Worlds of Jonas Moore combines live action video with computer animation and other media. Due to be released this summer, it brings the "graphic novel" to a new place.

"Jonas Moore" still has the traditional comic book look (as you can see here) but it will also leverage the iPod's multimedia capabilities.

Hi,
Howard Webster - creator of www.jonasmoore.com here - I read all your comments with interest. Actually - there were a few errors - we didn't use Comic Life. We've mashed up CGI, with a copyrighted digital comic book format, live action shot on DV and newsreel archive. Traditional comic books are locked on a page...if you check out the free previews in the download section - you will see how we overcome the scree size issue - and actually make it work. This project was all done independently - and we are about to post on UGO.com two new 3 minute previews for free download. Also, the comments about the screen size come from thinking 'in the box' - our attitude is to burn the box down altogether - and reinvent the comic book. It is an independent project - so please support us. And all comments are welcome! Wait until you see what is coming next on www.jonasmoore.com...

Regards and thanks. Howard

There's already a large comics scene for the iPod. You can download comics made for the iPod's screen size for free at http://www.clickwheel.net

of course, since the ipod is capable of panning across frames, allowing focus to change and incorporating sound effects, i don't think that the smaller screen size is going to be a problem - IF it is done well.

I think this is going to be a great medium for artistic expression and one that could develop beyond the name "graphic novel for ipod" and become something of its own.

It is interesting, I will give it that.

To echo the above, the "canvas" is too small in my opinion. A page can be subdivided in a myriad ways, a screen that's 1/16th that area places a lot of additional restrictions and has got to be plain uncomfortable for much more than very short periods of time. As such, I don't play video with my video iPod.

At least it's playable on a notebook computer. Maybe the larger screen of the iPhone might be enough of an improvement.

Wow, I will be able to read Frank Miller or Allan Moore on my iPod ... in two years time maybe :) and it will be pretty lame, because the panels are in a lot of different sizes... well, after all, iPhone wil be capable of reading PDF
