Use Quicksilver to boot into Windows

It is an interesting time to be a Mac user. More and more folks are seeing the light and picking up a Mac, perhaps to go with their iPods, and now you can even run Windows on a Mac. Boot Camp is great, but Boot Camp plus AppleScript plus Quicksilver is even better! This tutorial over at MacInstruct (love the logo by the way) shows you how to reboot your Mac into Windows using the awesomeness that is Quicksilver.

Thanks vm for the script. I attached a shortcut with Fast Scripts to it, which works fabulous.
As it is so fast in shutting down the Mac OS, does it really close all open apps in a clean and seroius way ?

Wonderful.

I have been waiting for something like this (though more interested in the script than the Quicksilver enhancement).

I use a Logitech cordless keyboard with my Mac, and because of the wonderfully efficient and robust Logitech drivers the Option key is hardly ever recognised on boot so it keeps defaulting to Mac (to boot into Windows I have to plug in my USB kb and reboot with Option held down).

Now I can just run the script when I want to boot into Windows to play a game etc.

(I note the reference to Macfit also, but I boot into OS X 90% of the time so don't really want to have to choose OS each time)

Also note that you actually won't have to change any of your settings to get back into OS X (the -nextonly flag means that next time you boot you'll return to OS X automatically).

John Cleary,

The entire point of the tutorial is that you don't have to sit around and wait while you hold the option key. Just activate the script and do whatever you want while Windows boots. That's at least two minutes faster than your solution. Did you even read the article?

I don't understand the fascination with Quicksilver. This 'tip' will take LONGER than the following:

Please note, I've used KB shortcuts cause the QS crowd seem to not like using a mouse. ;-)

1. Press Cntrl-Eject (on desktop, or just press power button on portable)

2. Press R

3. Wait for machine to reboot

4. Hold down Option

5. Press right arrow, Return on boot screen.

Boom. You're in Windows. And when you want to reboot back to the mac, you simply go:

1. Start->Turn Off -> Restart.

The quicksilver way, I'm guesssing it changes the boot drive, so to come BACK to the Mac, you'll have to:

1. Start -> Control Panels -> Startup Disk

2. Select "Mac HD"

3. Click Restart.

I'm happy with my 'Option-Boot'. It's not like when I boot into windows I want it to boot there again next time I restart.

Either way, I don't get the point of Quicksilver to do something like this.

Using quicksilver to boot into windows is just like 'crossing the streams'. You just don't do it. The results could be catastrophic.

Or install refit to give you an option of which OS to boot into every time you start the mac.
