Hugin panorama photo maker
In a previous Ask TUAW we covered a few of the panoramic photo stitching options available for the Mac. Now another tool for doing this has come to my attention and is probably worth a look for anyone interested in making panoramic pictures from multiple photos. Hugin is a cross-platform GUI for the Panorama Tools open source project created by Professor Helmut Dersch. It has many detailed options for stitching photos together exactly the way you want it done. As such it's probably not the easiest panorama tool to use, but by the same token it looks quite powerful. You may want to check out some of the tutorials available to get a sense of what it can do.Hugin is a free download from sourceforge.

I'm a fan of Calico. It's not cheap for the results justified the price for me. It's a port of "Autostich" for Mac.
Here are some of my results.

Hey cliph, thanks for the Calico info. I used to have autostitch back when I was using Windows, and have been looking around for a Mac port. Autostitch, in my experience, is better than panotools or the Photoshop CS built-in.

Hugin is definitely a cool app, but unfortunatly it works much more smoothly on the Windows side than OS X, specifically getting autopano and enblend to create control points and blend images.
I used hugin exclusively to create panoramas at http://www.aaronbennett.com/photos/panoramas/ (most on Windows, some on a Mac). If I had a huge pano to stitch, it's almost worth it to BootCamp into Windows. Here's hoping that someone, somewhere creates an easy to install autopano package...
On a side note, I've had a longstanding debate if Hugin is pronounced "Hew-gin" or "Hug-In," as the logo somewhat implies.

Autopano Pro is hands down the best stitching app for the Mac. I've made 500+ megapixel images before with it without having to manually do a thing other than check a few settings. It's utterly amazing how good it does even with complex backgrounds.

Autostitch (and the things based on it like Autopano Pro and Calico) is great. No fidiling around, it just does it for you.
You can probably run it under WINE if you download the windows version from http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html.
The demo version has no restrictions, you just have to download a new copy of it every 6 months or so.
