Adobe's CS3 icon branding taken to the next level - the rest of your apps
The new branding Adobe conceived for the new CS3 suite hasn't quite caught on with everyone just yet. Some say the icons are too bland and boring, while others like my friend John decided to take Adobe's 'periodic table of apps' concept to the next level. Via some icons found at sites like InterfaceLIFT and designing a few of his own, John has completely element-ized his entire Dock. In fact, I couldn't fit a decent picture that could display all the icons in this post, so head over to a TUAW gallery pic to take in the entire work of art - or monstrosity - depending on which side of the fence you sit on. Knock yourselves out if you feel like guessing each app - I have the entire list, but it won't be easy to nail 'em all.
[Update: For those that want a copy of most of these icons (some of them are home-made by my friend and not available publicly) as well as a few not shown here, TUAW reader David Mikula has quite a few available at his portfolio site, I Can't Fly. Thanks David!]

The icon pack can actually be found on www.icantfly.com/icons.
Or at least most of them are. I'd rather not take credit for iW, iD, Kn, DW, Fl. ha.
The source file is in the zip, and you can make the ones you're missing if necessary.
Cheers!
Dave

Hey--does anyone know the typeface they used?
I think it might be din or meta sans but I'd like to know for sure.

Did this myself a long time ago:

(Yeah, I know TinyPic sucks)
Made them all by myself, except the Adium icon.
All the Apps, from left to right:
Finder, Dashboard, Mail, Safari, Lolifox, iTunes, iChat, Adium, Skype, Photoshop, Vlc Media Player, NeoOffice, Azureus, iCal, Address Book, PhotoBooth, Preferences (systemvalg in Norwegian), Console (Konsoll in No), Activity Monitor, Terminal and Quicksilver.

Well, this exemplifies everything that is WRONG with this approach. Completely defeats the purpose of an icon. For instance, what are the two "iC" icons in different colors? What's the rest of it? Who knows!
What an assinine move.

yay for retards. Why would you want to make something so much LESS intuitive and MORE confusing? Nothing better to slow down my workflow than to figure out which "iC" stands for iCal and which for iChat. I'm reminded of the invention of the qwerty keyboard.......

Ok, 'scuse me for asking the obvious...
HOW do I replace the icons? Do I have to cut-n-paste via the "Get Info" dialog on every app?
This may be obvious to many experienced Mac users... but hey, go easy on me - I'm a recent "switcher". There, I said it - I feel so much better. I might have the courage to tell my parents soon :-)

I'm not sure whether I love it or hate, I like the idea of having standardized icons, but it looks like it would be hard to keep track of everything. The other downside would be that I'd inevitable arrange them by color rather than categories.

I prefer to keep the Adobe icons seperate - helps them stand out in my dock. With this approach your back to scanning through the icons trying to find your app. :(

In defense of myself, the OC part of me hated having some of the new icons but not all. Are some of the fonts not quite correct? Yep. Do I really care? Nope.
As for the less than polite responses (yay for retards), that is the great/worst thing about the internet. You get to say stuff in public that would get your arse knocked out if said to my (or someone else's) face. Take your meds, Thayne Miller, and turn your internal filter back on. Jackass.

What's even funnier than satirical ideas like these is the hilariously ernest comments that dim-bulbs (like Thayne Miller, Joshua Ochs, and Playstation 3) will post in response.
