Widget Watch: DreamHost status
I'm a pretty happy DreamHost customer, though I've been with enough basic hosting plans to realize that many hosts (at least the ones in my price range) might experience some hiccups from time to time. It just seems to be the way hosting is, at least in my tax bracket. Fortunately, DreamHost offers a status website and RSS feed to help customers check in on the network, but a fellow DreamHost customer by the name of Geoff has created a Dashboard widget just to give us one more option for staying on top of things. The widget simply loads the same status text one can read via the website or RSS, but it offers a compact, quick-access window into the world of DreamHost's status without having to refresh a website or add yet another feed to your exponentially increasing RSS list.

Nice and all, but when I've seen the post title, and just after seeing the actual DH status feed next to my Feedburner "site unavailble" alerts feed , I've imagined this widget would be more of a service monitoring tool than a simple RSS reader.
Oh well.

I've did a little search and found this widget, sounds pretty cool and spot on what I was looking for.
The thing's called WatchMouse

Its a little disconcerting that they -need- a status widget. Do they really go down with such frequency that you'd need it on your Dashboard like a CPU monitor?

I agree - give watchmouse a try - it's free and works with any host, not just dreamhost.
And any host that needs a widget like this is kinda sad anyway, isn't it? I use A2 Hosting, it's $4 a month and never goes down.

that's the default template from Dashcode: 10 out of 10 for usefulness, 1 out of 10 for creativity, heh. :D
3. - damn straight GoDaddy never lets me down / hang.

dhost can be quite sucky at times and in fact had probs this afternoon - however it is great that they have a status report site. At least i know there's a problem, that they're working on it and that it will be resolved.
1host, the company i use for my reseller account is much, much worse and when there are problems they are of the spectacular kind.
another thing bout dhost - their webpanel was designed by a bunch of blind monkeys with a bad case of dyslexia.

I need something like this for MediaTemple. Their Grid servers seem to have glitches about once a week. Their customer service is top notch but I wish they could get their issues ironed out.

I use dreamhost and have been pretty happy with them as well. There have been a few hicups but better than I have had with other hosting solutions.
If you enter code TUAW when you check out you get $10 discount on everything, worth a try.

dreamhost can be sucky at times, but the things I like about them far outweigh the suckiness (for me and friends I've talked to about it.)
pshaw.. $10 discount!? try a $97 dollar discount with the code ECLECTICISM
(users can create referral codes to pass on some or all of the $97 referral bonus dreamhost gives for each person you get to sign up. the above poster decided to pass $10 of that bonus on to you, while I passed ALL $97 DOLLARS of it on to you. muhahaha!)
