LogMeIn Free for Mac

LogMeIn looks like a great way to support those remote Mac users in your life that depend on you. In my circle of friends I am known as the computer guy (both Macs and PCs, I'm just that good) so I know the pain of trying to get someone to launch System Preferences over the phone. 'Ok, just click on the little icon in the Dock that looks like an Apple with a switch next to it. Sure is taking you awhile to find it.. Oh, you decided to click a bunch of stuff I didn't tell you to click. Yeah, that's great. Now, do you have a recent backup handy?'
Suffice to say, tech support over the phone isn't fun when you're supporting people who aren't especially technically savvy. Enter LogMeIn, which offers up a simple and free way to remotely administer someone else's Mac from a web browser (sadly, Safari only for now). The product is in beta at the moment (what isn't in beta in this day and age) but it looks promising and you can't beat the price.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I use this regularly to support PCs in my office. It does not store the remote access passwords. It is significantly more secure than using VNC. Also, the end user can turn it off at any time.

Logmein is great not least: if the other machine has a dual monitor setup, if you use remote desktop, all ends up congregating on one screen, whereas Logmein leaves it alone and allows you to switch monitors. (I use it regularly to take over a PC at church which is set up for projecting, with control and view screen and ending up with everything in the wrong place is not an option!! Works very nicely on a win mobile 5 pda phone) I successfully trouble shot my bro in laws machine abroad (talking to him at the same time on skype).

I have used the free edition of LogMeIn on my PC's for a few years. As soon as I saw the mac version was out, I immediately installed it. Worth the wait!!! The product works and acts like the Windoze version, and now I can talk to all my computers no matter where I am. One thing though... I miss the icon in the system tray that Windoze has. Also it really should have given the options of where to install it. I would have preferred to have it in my mac Applications folder.
June 13 2007 at 11:42 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was skeptical. We're mostly a Windows shop, but occasionally I'm asked to support a Mac user. I have to support one tonight actually... and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that LMI does indeed work to control a Mac from my PC!
The caveat? Only the "full" version is supported. No IT reach that I know of, no LMI Rescue. So you have to give the person YOUR login and YOUR password, and have them install the program, and that might be a stretch for some people.
But once installed it's a no-brainer.
No 18, if you do spotlight search on logmein you should be able to find the plist files etc. and delete anything that didn't uninstall. I've been running it on an intel mini and can't detect any performace hit according to iStat pro so far.

That's the stupidist thing I ever saw. I've been working in IT for nine years now, so give them effort for trying, but everything the said was unoriginal and very slapstick comedic type lines.
