An AppleScript for automatically opening WWDC '07 news sites
While we unfortunately won't have anyone liveblogging Steve Jobs' WWDC '07 keynote tomorrow morning, that doesn't mean we won't help you track down who will. Nik Fletcher has created an AppleScript that will automatically open nine - count 'em, nine - news sites and blogs that will be covering tomorrow's keynote and the rest of the WWDC 07 events in separate tabs of your default browser. He even includes a quick tip for those using Safari who haven't enabled tabbed browsing since - even still on 10.4 Tiger - Apple hasn't switched on this revolutionary feature by default. The nine sites Nik included in the AppleScript are as follows:
- Engadget
- MacRumors Live
- MacDailyNews (sigh, I know, but hey)
- AppleGazette
- Ars Technica
- Gizmodo
- Slashgear
- LoopRumors
- Apple Matters

Hahaha I like this idea. It's great how much we mac fanboys obsess over events like this. They are so entertaining for me. What I really miss though is MacRumors' old MacRumorsLive app they used to have for events like this. Basically it was just an IRC client but it was a direct feed to the keynote, no need to refresh or even autorefresh. You can still find the app somewhere but I don't believe they feed to it anymore

Our IRC channel is still active during the event. We still update to it. and it is faster than the web updates (no refresh timelag).

The reason we dont' advertise it, is that it tends to max out around 6000 simultaneous users... where as the web updates have reached over 200,000 simultaneous. But feel free to use it.

Oh That's excellent news Arn! I seem to remember having trouble with it last time there was an event, maybe because it's not UB or maybe there was some other reason. I'm not actually going to be on a Mac during the event but I've got an IRC client at work. So thanks again for the good news!

hi
i have a serious problem. i just switched (woohoo!) but my imac i just bought won't start up! i do everything the instructions ask of me, and all that happens is it makes a sighing sound and the white light at the right hand part of the imac lights up. the screen doesn't do anything! i called apple and they couldn't help me b/c the computer was too new. its a basic 24 inch imac with the only options being an upgrade to 2 gigs ram in-store and the wireless keyboard and mouse.
help please?

What's wrong with MacDailyNews? Is there something I don't know? Never read the site.

MacDailyNews is going to provide live coverage? I thought all they did was quote other sites and have "special" Mac users comment about it.

As we've done for more than five years now, Macworld.com will provide live updates. This year we're doing it in two different ways: live "news story written minute by minute in complete sentences as you read" at Macworld.com, and "live blog" style at macuser.com.
Why people don't remember that we've been doing this forever, but remember everyone who's been doing in the last couple of years, mystifies me a bit.
(As proof, you can see our live update of the iPod launch in 2001 here: http://www.macworld.com/news/2001/10/23/event/ )

Jason: maybe some of us prefer to read the impressions of people who've had slightly less Kool-aid? :)

Sam:
I dont understand why Apple wont help you! You get 90 days of free telephone support when you buy a mac, so there is no such thing as it being too new to support. I would phone them again and deman help.
Also, you can return it to teh store for them to look at, or speak to the store over the phone. It could be their fault if they installed some bad RAM or something.
I cant really offer much help myself here as I wont be on the net for the rest of the day.
