Safari for Windows hits 1 million downloads in 2 days
Just 48 hours after its release, the public beta of Safari 3 for Windows has been downloaded 1 million times. That's pretty impressive. Too bad we don't know what percentage of those downloads went to hard core Windows users, curious Mac users (running Parallels, Boot Camp, etc.) or folks who frequently use both a Mac and a Windows machine (at home and at work, for example). In any case, there are a lot of Windows users who got a piece of Apple goodness this week. We hope they like it.
Thanks, Jesse!

Agreed. I like my Mac, I use Windows at work. I'm comfortable with both. But for those of you that have Safari for Windows running smoothly on your XP machine... I have no idea what's going on with mine.
I run a pretty tight machine (I like to think) and I've had exactly the same experience as some of the people above. Safari crashes when you attempt to add or import bookmarks. Crashes for...well...about half of the pages out there. And, best of all, crashes when you attempt to submit a bug report!
So, Beta, yes. But if I can't even submit a bug report, how does beta help Apple improve the software? I've reinstalled three times, and just installed the security update. No dice. This was not ready to go out. They really fell down on this one.
I downloaded Safari 3 to my PPC iBook, Intel iMac and Windows XP Pro desktop. I found it to be simply wonderful on all three. No problems, glitches, crashes or issues.
Iâm thinking there are people that will bad mouth it simply to keep the Apple / PC debate alive and well, or just to stir the pot, how sad. If youâre going to trash Safari 3 for Windows, please tell me youâre not doing so simply because itâs by Apple?
I need some help.
I'm a windows user in love with macOS and I wanted to try safari on my windows XP. Now, whit the 3.0.1 seems to go better than with 3.0 but I don't know why, there is nothing writed anywhere. I go through Apple website because of the flash and buttons things, but I can't read anything. Some idea?
Sorry for my english, I'm spanish.
Apple's "Designed to be secure from day one" certainly turned out to be a piece of marketing farce, especially if you can get something like three different security groups & individuals issue 0-day exploit notices within a few hours.
Safari "Beta" is actually about as good as a Firefox Alpha. Public Beta is supposed to be something that's almost ready to go as a full fledged product, rather than being just arrived into beta status. Actually, I've had more stable nightlies from the Firefox team, and that's only supposed to be for developer testing.
Safari 3 does look like it might be a nice product, I just can't have it hang so quickly.
This software is bad and yet there out there gloating about how they had a million downloads. this software has so many security holes its a mess.
They should take it down and do a limited beta test just like all the other companys do. example MS deepdish
I'm running OSX 10.4.9 on both a PPC G4 desktop Mac and a PowerBook G4. I have Virtual PC v7 on both machines to run Windows XP Pro. Yes I know its slooooooow but on occasion I must utilize it. I downloaded Safari 3.0 beta for "windows" on both machines. The installer ran and loaded (Win) Safari with no problem.
I then started it on my desktop machine - Safari "title bar" appeared for an instant - then crashed on startup - with windows error/message asking me if Id like tor report it to microsoft!!!
I then started it on my powerbook - (same exact thing) - Safari "title bar" appeared for an instant - then crashed on startup - with windows error/message asking me if Id like tor report it to microsoft!!!
Removed Safari on both machines via add/remove control panel, - downloaded new safari 3 (windows app) to the windows desktop, reloaded & restarted - same results both machines - crash on launch. Has anyone else tried this setup???
I don't use Safari on my Macbook, why would I want use it on my XP machine?

Also there are about 300 million computers(might be more, but that is the number I saw), Mac, Windows, Linux in the US and 1 million is a whopping 0.33% market share increase. That isn't alot and like I said how many were promptly uninstalled never to try it again.
I understand this is a Beta, and there is arguments over what a beta is but thats doesn't really matter. What matters is Apple put a beta that crashes on many PCs and doesn't work well on many others, front and center on their website. How many people will download it not; either realizing that it is a beta, or not even knowing what a beta is; and have it crash, or not work properly. Not everyone sees beta and knows what that is. The average computer user might just think the actual name of the product is Safari for Windows Beta.
So lets assume average user downloads this and it sucks, which from my experience it does, they uninstall it, and think all things that Apple makes except for their iPod sucks and will now never switch to a Mac. Or they go to at&t a month from now and want to get a smart phone, the rep shows them the iPhone tells them it runs a full version of Safari while the 8525 uses IE. They remember Safari sucked and they know their IE7 works fine. They buy the 8525. I know people will say IE7 is clunky and a resource hog, but avg Joe computer user doesn't know this. He knows he hits the IE button, he goes to the internet and it works. He used Safari and it crashed, or there was no text, or is looked blurry, or whatever. He doesn't know the inner workings and swears off all things Apple.
The moral of this wall of text. Even if it is a legit beta, don't show it off front and center. When Microsoft has public betas you have search for them.
For the record, I had the public beta of IE7, and it never crashed, never had any big issues, the RSS feeds didn't work all the time, and my history wouldn't search or show up in the correct date order. Those are small bugs, not like Safari
This beta is not a beta, is less than alpha. I got a lot problems opening yahoo and ebay (missing names of the link). and it's really slow

But when Apple releases a beat (an poorly executed one at that, even on MS standards) Apple fans defend it as a beta.
Weak. Double Standards are so British Empire.
