iPhone gallery shows off Dock, iPhone headphones

Eagle eyed TUAW reader Eric noticed that Apple has updated the iPhone photo gallery. Not only that, but they updated it to include pictures of a heretofore unseen iPhone dock. Not the most groundbreaking of news, I will admit, but since we have relatively little information about the iPhone we need to obsess over something, right?

The gallery also includes a better picture of the iPhone headphones, which include a microphone so you needn't lift the iPhone to your head when someone calls you while you're listening to Macy Gray (or any other artist, one assumes).

Update: It would seem that we have could a glimpse of the iPhone dock before, during the intro keynote. That glimpse was fleeting though, so now you can stare at the dock for hours and hours.

@ #21 and others on the "industrial design" of the white headphones. Apple is the king of ID, but this goes far deeper than the industrial design. The white headphones are the iPod brand (have you seen an ad lately, or for that matter, any iPod ad ever?) It's become iconic, and that association is probably more important than matching colors. They've been using white headphones with the color iPods forever, and it didn't look funny then, and I doubt it will look funny now. People will say, ah, Apple.

Anyone notice the new YouTube button on the iPhone's 'home' page, it looks like retro tv, sitting below the SMS widget and above the clock widget.

Its not mentioned anywhere else

Ummm...I'm pretty sure you adapt the Industrial design around the components and the materials required to bring the form together. When you talk about Industrial design it is a combination of sorts of disciplines that you consider to arrive at your end product. You need to work with the engineering to determine whether you can construct the form and then consider the materials that may or may not make it viable. I have a BA in Industrial Design actually and was merely making a quick point (simplifying it for the average Joe) so pull it apart if you like...pfff.

And yes, black earphones; because you cannot surely say to me that the white plastic earphones match the colour and material scheme of the phone itself can you? It would be like buying a sleek BMW and putting in Neon Green leather seating. Or to bring it closer to home a nice shiney white iMac and the peripherals all come in black.

I understand the manufaturing molds are in place and the earphones are proven so sticking with the form is fine but they just stand out against the sleek dark beauty that is the phone itself. They could have made them black. Heck even the wireless bluetooth earpiece they have designed is made in black to match the styling of the phone! So why not the dock or even the bundled earphones?

Don't you think that the iPhone will fit/work with any iPod dock that tolerates, say, the 30/80GB "video" iPod? The dimensions of the iPhone are nearly identical (well, the width of the base, and down to a couple hundreths of an inch in thickness)

David McLeod, I suggest that you stop embarrassing yourself.

Black earphones? - Yeah, Apple wants to look like everyone else. *rolls eyes*
Apple's signature color for accessories is white. It's partly the reason why the iPod is such an icon in pop culture.

> Jobs/Ive: "yeah we spent hours on the iPhone >industrial design, the touch interface, battery >positioning, specific metal choices and colours"

You don't seem to know the difference:

Industrial design = FORM and FUNCTION.

Touch interface = ENGINEERING. Jobs confessed that what makes the iPod great is its software. "iPod is software wrapped with beautiful hardware."

Metal choices and colours = Important part of design (weight & volume), but other than this, it's pure STYLING.

It looks awful in white! They should have made the dock black as well as doing a black earphones with maybe a little touch of anodized metal on them.

Really don;t understand why they didn't carry those little details through. It looks like:

Jobs/Ive: "yeah we spent hours on the iPhone industrial design, the touch interface, battery positioning, specific metal choices and colours"

Me: "yeah it looks good, what about headphones or a dock"

Jobs/Ive: "yeah we have that covered, we just threw in the same crap we distribute for our iPods, but put a little speaker thing on the wire"

Me: "riiiight"
