Mark Howson from The Mac Pak sends word that another mysterious bundle has been posted, this time for the very, very low price of $5.00. The Mac Pak, you'll remember, is one of the more mysterious software deals out there-- you pay the money for three different secret applications, and then at the end of the sale (three days and change as of this writing, so around July 1st), the apps are revealed, and sent to you. Buyer beware, but a fun deal, and I'm not sure I've ever seen one this cheap. All we know about the apps this time around is that added together they'd usually cost you over $50, and that's about it. Back in May, the apps were revealed as the sale went along (and the price raised), but there's no indication that's happening this time around-- looks like it's a $5 shot in the dark. Will the low price pull you in, or are you going to pass on buying something you might not want?

I can't get the site to load at the moment. Just curious, what are some of the titles they've given away in the past? Just trying to get an idea of whether it will be apps I've ever heard of. I have a new MBP to play with, and I'm feeling like taking a chance this time.

This must be the absolutely height of consumerism.
Them: We've got something you can buy, but we won't tell you what it is!
You: Great! I just want to buy something, anything, no matter if I might need it or not. Where do I pay?
Me: Just send $5 to a charity. If you actually needed whatever they are selling then you would have bought it already.

I've been consitently disappointed with with MacZot with I believe is the same group doing the MacPak. It's not that the software is bad, it's just usually stuff I just don't need. MacHeist was great, I use about 70% of that software, but there's only so much great software to go around i guess, just my 2ยข

What if they are apps you already own? Do you get a refund?

Yawn. Don't care. Is this kind of Crazy Eddie stuff really necessary?
The fact that they're at the point of fobbing of $5 mystery meat packages suggests that the fad is about done with. Does tuaw need to keep being their marketing bitch?

I got the first MacPack but I didn't bother downloading a single piece of software apart from DEVONagent (which I've sued twice). A total waste of money. I won't be bothering this time.

MakPak should leave hype and gimmicks to the people who can pull it off (e.g., Apple). This is not even remotely interesting.
Software is about utility. If your local hardware store offered three mystery tools for $5, would you buy? Probably not, because you rarely need a 2.5mm widget chuck -- unless you actually do need one for some purpose, in which case you already own one. Same with software.
It's no bargain if it's not something you need. Spending $5 to save $100 on something useless is a waste of $5.

TUAW should stop pushing these kinds of things, it is really hurting their integrity....
...Remember that "Cha-Ching" fiasco? and how they pumped that app up, and to have it flop!, even calling it the 'Quicken Killer'!!!

Hey "ME." I don't think I pushed anything here-- quote "buyer beware," and we have comments for a reason, so the comments on this post would make me run away from this deal. As one of you so insightfully said, $5 for something you don't want is $5 wasted.
We're not pushing anything-- I thought it was an interesting deal and it is, but it's not one that I would go for, and from the looks of it, it's not one many others would go for either. End of story.

I'm guessing SuperDuper is one of the apps. Leopard and Time Machine is going to cut into their business, big time.

I've got a bad feeling that some of this software is software that is destined for an upgrade soon. The developer then hopes the users will pay the upgrade price. An understandable method but one that many people don't like as they sometimes feel cheated.
