uTorrent for Mac
Lots of the youngsters out there are clogging up the Internet tubes with their torrents and their Rock and Roll music. Sadly, the choice of BitTorrent clients (BitTorrent, in case you aren't familiar, is a distributed peer to peer downloading protocol. The more people who download something, the faster it is for everyone... in theory) on OS X has been missing a biggie: uTorrent. uTorrent is the most popular Bit Torrent client on Windows, and it was recently purchased by BitTorrent, Inc which is a mighty fine stamp of approval if you ask me. Sadly, it isn't available on the Mac. So very, very sad.Weep no longer, torrent obsessed Mac fiends! uTorrent is coming to OS X and according to TorrentFreak it is pretty slick. It is faster, smaller, and simpler than the other offerings on OS X and it is free. What's not to like? Ah, right, the fact that it is in closed beta at the moment.
Thanks, RM.

Does anyone know when Utorrent is going to be available for mac OS X?
September 13 2007 at 10:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been waiting for uTorrent's port ever since I switched to Macs back in 2005! And now that I'm used to Transmission it finally comes along... it'll be nice to see which one I'll end up using!

Any reasonable torrent client really has no limit to speed (unless your network connection is faster than your BUS or hard drive write speed... in which case I hate you).
Azureus is an awesome client, feature-wise. I've sworn by it on Mac OS, because it has every feature I could possibly want (plus more), and it adheres to all of the standards that make trackers happy. The problem with Azureus, though, is that it eats my computer alive in terms of resources. Because it's written in Java (to be cross-platform), it's such a system hog. (And no, I'm not trying to get into a Java debate, don't start.)
The point of uTorrent is that it has all the great features of a really good client (like Azureus) but is tiny and uses barely any system resources. If they can re-build uTorrent in Mac OS style, it will be like the supermodel Azureus. And I will love it like I've never loved a torrent client before.
I always thought Azureus was fine for the purpose. I've been able to download at 7.3MB/Sec on a 100MB fiber connection. not Mbit, MByte. I'll give transmission a shot now and uT.. when available. But frankly i don't see the point. Yes Azureus is a bit java and XP/Linux like. It has some great features, although the preferences is sometimes confusing. I'd like something simpler to configure. but never felt that footprint of the app was an issue? What am i missing?
Nevermind... downloading to test myself

Back to Darvin, though I doubt he will show his face again:
No encryption - True.
Reports stats badly - WRONG. Transmission fixed this ages ago!
Let me share my own stats, from the tracker, for ONE torrent:
Size: 1448.79 MB
Downloaded: 0 MB
Uploaded: 369.09 MB
Funny, I remember unpacking it and using it... How did I manage that?
No DHT - WRONG. Had this for a long time.
It has PEX. Not DHT. They are not the same. http://transmission.m0k.org/trac/ticket/7
No settings for the number of connections - WRONG.
Really? Where?
No lazy bitfield support - no idea.
That's becoming more and more obvious...
No web interface - Pfft.
Pfft? I guess that's why both Azureus and uTorrent have options to at least have one...
Auto-import won't work if you use it over a network - Pfft.
As above, great justification for a lack of a serious feature.
You're sadly misinformed. It's a shame, too, that you dismiss good features because you don't have a need for them. Then again, with the developer's stance at Transmission, I'm sure you fit in nicely.
Has anyone tried XTorrent? I think it's a great app that has the simplicity and power features that won me over.
June 28 2007 at 2:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI like to use a combination of the latest nightly Transmission, and for RSS support, I use TVShows available from
http://tvshows.sourceforge.net/
I've used uTorrent, Transmission, BitTorrent, Azureus, and Xorrent (as well as others,) and uTorrent is my favorite. It's full-featured, small, efficient, and doesn't crash. I hope the Mac version is as good.
June 28 2007 at 11:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm definitely a transmission fanâit has the most mac-like interface of any BT client I've come across (and I've used quite a few, including xtorrent)âand to be honest I was ready to give µTorrent a metaphorical punch in the face when I saw the story title. Yes, I know it's the best client for windows, but 90% of the time ports from windows->mac utterly suck; that or they're designed to be cross platform, but written on windows/linux and suck anway (read: Azureus).
That said, the preview makes the mac version seem half way decent... but it'll have to be something damn revolutionary to get me to change from Transmission.
I believe this may be the silliest thing to argue about...which torrent client is better...I especially enjoy the statement:
"uTorrent is a billion times better than Transmission or any other client"
really? a billion? did you do all those calculations yourself cause i only came up with like three times better...
anyways as a relatively new mac user, i am very excited about micro torrent (utorrent) coming to mac, as it is the only thing beside firefox that i miss from my pc
