Vienna 2.2 being prepped for release
Vienna is a free, open source news reader that we like (we've written about it here); it's not as full-featured as NetNewsWire but it's a pretty slick app. The Vienna Development Team is preparing to release version 2.2, which will feature a huge list of changes and improvements, including:- A new UI (no more brushed metal!)
- Russian localization
- Improved drag-and-drop from Safari
- Unsubscribe/resubscribe command added to the File menu
- SQLite updated to 3.4.0
Vienna is free, universal and requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or later.

Version 2.2 is a viable contender to NewsFire. One nagging problem -- there seems to be no sorting criteria for the list of RSS subscriptions. Its handy to have them auto-sort by the number of unread items.

It took all of about thirty minutes for me to switch from NewsFire to Vienna permanently. While the app doesn't quite have the spit-polish that DW is known for, I'm finding the overall usability to be a step above. The split "Condensed" layout sealed the deal for me.
Way to go, OSS guys! Thanks for the rockin' app!

Wow! I usually don't run beta versions, but I can't go back to stable now.
Thumbs up to the developers for moving the toolbar back to the top where it belongs.
After a sllllllllllllow initial launch (something to do with the new SQLite version converting my db?), this seems way snappier as well.
If there were some way Vienna could use SyncServices, I'd be 110% hooked.

I think the top filter bar is just intolerably ugly and confusing. It doesn't really make sense to put two search fields near each other anyway.
