Last week I wrote about something brewing over on the MacHeist pages, and this week it looks like the project has come to fruition-- it's called Skunk Works, and in addition to the giveaways they're doing with the MacUpdate promo, they're now giving away software.Yes, signing up on that page is supposed to give you a free copy of Linkinus (up to an including 1.1, not including 1.2, so read the fine print), the IRC client we mentioned earlier this year. The app is also now included in the MacHeist version of the MacUpdate bundle (so if you already bought that, save the free copies for someone else), and MacHeist recommends that even if you get it for free, you go ahead and purchase it anyway (to support the developers). Plus, a purchase will clear you until the next major version, not just 1.1.
Like some of you guys, I'm getting a little tired of all the hype around these Mac software bundles, so I've been trying to cut back on this kind of news. Still, free software is hard to pass up. If you've been looking for a substitute for Colloquy, this might be just what you need at a price you can't pass up.

Im totally over macheist and there ridiculous claims. This is just another scheme to get more visitors.
I just wish the media (including tuaw) would get over them aswell so we can hear about real news not marketing/money making schemes.

I was a beta tester of Linkinus and so I got a free license. It's a great IRC client - much better than X-Chat Aqua, that's for sure. Never tried Colloquy though. It's only getting better too.

Can we stop posting about these sites please? No one cares about this second rate software? It's free for a reason, no one was buying it.

#2, does it support DCC Chat as well as DCC file transfer?
My only gripe with Colloquy was that it didn't handle them, making sharebots unusable and it took years for them to implement it since it was first filed in their bug tracking system... I hope Linkinus doesn't suffer from the same issue.

I for one DO appreciate these sites. The bundled software is not all garbage, in fact most of it is usually pretty good stuff.
Though the latest MacUpdate bundle will probably fall short of offering the really good apps due to lack of participation, it's still a pretty good deal if you want a few of these apps.
We as die-hard Mac users must remember that many Mac users are not, and these bundle can save them money, and introduce them to what's out there in a way that a simple listing on MU or VT cannot.

The MacHeist bundle got me Delicious Library, TextMate, and NewsFire for all under the price of Delicious Library; and gave me 7 other apps with it. How can you go wrong??

iDarbert: No Linkinus does not support DCC Chat as of YET. It's planned for 1.2, which, while still a couple of months away, will rock :)

I took a look at Linkinus last night. Very disappointing for a 1.1 release. Certainly not something intuitive for most Mac users.
With that said it shows alot of potential and while aimed a little more at the power user folks for the moment I just don't feel it deserves a 1.x version label.

#4: Colloquy _does_ support DCC chat in the current version...
Anyway, while Linkinus looks good, it still has it's quirks and oddities and I don't think it will replace Colloquy for me -- not yet, at least...!
