Shaun Martin drops a note that
Cog, an open source audio player that plays pretty much every format you'd want to play (I don't know if I'd ever need to play anything in
Monkey's Audio but sure enough, it's there) has hit
version .06. The release features a brand new UI (with two pullout drawers-- one that browses the filesystem for music, and another that pops up to show info on the playing file), plugin support, preferences (including builtin global hotkeys, which I really enjoy), and everything else you'd expect in an audio player-- Growl support, Last.fm support, gapless playback, and more.
The only little flaw I can find is that there seems to be two Help menus-- maybe the Cog guys just want to be extra helpful. At any rate, if you're looking for a quick and free little open source audio player as an alternative to
Apple's iPhone Activator,
Cog will probably turn your gears.

The comparison with iTunes is a bit misleading AMHA. Cog is a sleek, fast, and simple player, but just this.
OTOH, if you seek for a complete iTunes replacement (not a simple player, but also handling ipods etc.) then Floola is more the thing to check (free, cross-platform osx/win/linux, does all iTunes does apart buying music -incl. tag edition, song rating and playlists, plus copies songs back to mac, doesn't lock your ipod on a given machine...)

"...plays pretty much every format you'd want to play..."
Except AAC. Big exception. I like Cog, though, and use it all the time. I hope v.06 has some stability improvements.

Billy K: AAC is on the compatibility list on the Cog Website.

Thanks for pointing this app out - I've been looking for a player like this. Just dl'd the new version - only one help menu here - maybe the author forgot his/her glasses?

Cog can't play protected AAC files, but regular ones work fine.

Yeah, we were thinking the same thing over at the Cog forums unless it's some obscure bug in one of the localizations..
Whatever you're smoking Mike, be sure to share with the rest of the class ;-)

Hey the stuff I'm smoking has nothing to do with this! :)
Seriously, I'm running Cog version .06 (r516) on my Powerbook G4, in OS X 10.4.10, and every time I load it up, I see two help menus. I can take a screenshot if you don't believe me. At first, I thought it was just a glitch, but no, every time I load it up, I get two help menus.
Otherwise the software's awesome. :)
