Happy Birthday, iCal

There's something that can be said for a broken clock - It's correct twice a day. Which is more than you can say about the iCal icon - it's accurate only once a year. Today is that day!

It was on July 17, 2002 that iCal was born (hence the date on its icon). Three years later, in April of 2005, version 2.0 was released.

Today, our old friend iCal has a younger sibling on the iPhone and synchronizes with Google Calendar (kind of). Mac system administrators are waiting for the iCal server that will be a part of Leopard Server, while end users anticipate iCal 3.0 in October.

Happy birthday, iCal. Now go back into the box with Keynote, Pages, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and all the other applications that Apple has forgotten.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Me too! Love it how iCal displays my birthday every day of the year. Gee, does that make me narcissistic?

Me, too, Alex. July 17th is, indeed a good day.

BTW, I first reported the reason for the date on iCal two years ago, after a little bit of sleuthing (http://outtacontext.com/life/archive/000301.shtml). And, every year since I get a great bonus birthday present: a huge uptick in my Web stats! -g

Hey, at least it's right once a year. ;-)

Interesting .. I always thought the July 17 date was an homage to Disneyland - which opened it's gates on July 17, 1955 - which just so happens to be the day I was born (although I doubt one had to do with the other).

In any case, congrats!

The next version of iCal has its own page in the Leopard feature tour. I wouldn't put it in the forgotten applications bin just yet.

For those willing to take the leap and have their iCal icon change according to the date, there's an app called iConiCal that does exactly that.

Don't forget about Nitrozac's iCal painting on eBay:
