Lest we forget in all the iPhone hoopla, Apple does still make computers, and they've been moving them too. According to IDC, In the second quarter Apple moved into a virtual third place tie with Gateway at 5.6% of the US market (though Gateway did ship about 5000 more units). The particularly good news is that Apple's shipments grew 26% year over year versus 7.2% growth for the industry as a whole. Other "small" vendors did well also, however, with Toshiba and Acer posting even more impressive growth numbers than Apple. Nonetheless, considering the relative lack of hardware bumps on the Mac line this year, these kind of numbers must warm hearts in Cupertino.

Sadly, only reason Acer and Toshiba do so great is because they sell a lot of laptops and desktops through Wal-Mart. Less Fortunate people don't think Apple is affordable but in the long run you get more for your money compared to a pc.

Speaking of Toshiba, right below this article (at the time the comment link was clicked) an ad was being displayed that said "Look what Intel and Toshiba have cooked up," as a tie in to Ratatouille.
Why is Disny/Pixar hooked up with Intel and TOSHIBA?

Of course, as always, this only measures NEW sales. I guess there is no actual market share data, i.e. out of computers in people's homes, how many are Macs and how many aren't? Considering people keep Macs much longer than fairly disposable PCs, I'm sure there are a higher percentage of Mac users than that 5.6% number. I just wish someone could figure out what it is!

So far, I really haven't seen any road statistics that showed the Mac installed base. The best you can do is estimate it based on web site hit data and it's not that much better than their average market share.
Showing what are "only" new sales matters though, because that's where the computer maker gets its income. Computer makers don't care if you ditch their computer in one year or ten, they only got your money when you bought it.

I'm curious what percentage of these sales were made by Apple Specialist (Apple Authorized Resellers). Apple seems to have given us quite a snub at our last ASCM meeting yet we still sell a lot of boxes for them.
