coconutWiFi updates to 2.0
Version 2.0 features a "completely rewritten core," the display of the BSSID and the channel number in the window, and AirPort power control right there in the window. Unfortunately (and this seems like a dealbreaker for some reason, even though the Radar widget doesn't do it), you can't connect to a network by clicking on it, but apparently a fix is coming soon. The other drawback would be that I'm not sure I want a visual of networks updating constantly on my menu, as a good 80% of the time, I'm at home and know exactly what network I'm on. But if you've been looking for a good way to do this, coconutWiFi might be it.

I love this software. It works under panther (which is what I use on my 500mhz iBook. Don't worry, as soon as I take the ram form it's current 192mb to max of 576mb, tiger is going right on there), and it is very easy to use.
I have only one minor complaint, and I wrote the developer about it, so I don't know if he fixed it in 2.0: if you select the "show number of networks behind bubble" option, it displays a number next to the bubble, which is a very handy feature. however, as soon as you reboot, the option becomes unchecked, and you have to reselect it, which gets tiresome after a while. How hard can it be to make it remember an option between reboots? perhaps he should move that option to the preferences, since it seems to remember prefs between reboots.

it would help if there was a strength indicator as well. right now i'm happy with istumbler or kismac.

As a happy (old) coconutWiFi user, I've got a suggestion: the 'quit' item at the bottom of the menu. Just like you, I spend most of my time in known areas. But when I'm out and about, I just fire up cWF, let it load, look at the menu, see what the air looks like, and then quit it. (Which I guess is the whole point of Dashboard, but I'm not a big Dashboard fan.) But there are times when I like to leave it running.
