Hey Dvorak, welcome to 1984
Maybe I shouldn't even link to this latest John C. Dvorak column, since in the past he's essentially admitted to antagonizing Mac users just to get traffic, but it's not every day that Dvorak basically admits that the Mac is superior. He goes out of his way to tell us he's not switching for his "personal use" but having used an iMac for the past couple of months on some other job, he's now allowing that "the machine is not half bad." He actually tries to downplay the gap between Macs and PCs - "the differences between the Mac and the PC that really matter are minor" - but he does concede that he senses "the OS is more solid than Microsoft Windows." He concludes with the obvious: Macs are more elegant and more useable. Well, Dvorak, welcome to 1984, better late than never.[via Digg]

It's about time! I've noticed lately on TWiT that he has been "nicer" about Apple. He takes somewhat favorably of the iPhone (as a device) and the iPod. He has been ragging on Vista quite a bit more too.

i don't care if he IS suddenly grudgingly praising macs -- the guy has made lots of money over the years stoking the fires of apple-haters. i wish he would just sink faster into irrelevancy.

I could be wrong but I thought Dvorak wrote for Mac World or Mac User 100 years ago. Nope I am right. Check Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Dvorak

Why should anyone care? Hating him is giving him more attention than he deserves.

Dvorak = king of the trolls.
Unlike most Apple bashers who never actually try an Apple product but are content to blather ignorantly, Dvorak tries it and likes it. Yet still tries to sound cantankerous with his praise.
I'd be happy to *not* have Dvorak in the Apple user camp, thanks. Ignorance has a platform, and that platform is Windows.

I think we all know what the "D" in Dvorak stands for.

just take out 'V' and 'A' from Dvorak (VA = Victory for Apple on all fronts!) and you get something to flush through the John (C.)

I could car less if Dvorak recommends a Mac or a TRS80.
Dvorak is a smug prick who the world would not miss should he decide to go live out the rest of his days in a cave eating guano.
I was always glad his column was in the back of Macworld or MacUser (I forget which one) so we has something for the puppies to pee on.

I was going to add my two cents to this thread, but #8 said it all.

I know I may get flamed for this, but Macs weren't better for a long time. In fact, everything in betweem the first Mac and OS X was pretty much right crap.
I'll go wherever the best computers are. For a while it was PCs, now it's Macs.

sam, you are right on. OS 9 was pure shit (oh god the horror, it was just so bad) and OS X wasn't very good either till they fixed all the kinks and Exposé came out.
Mac is definitely better right now though. Vista really missed the mark.

I love John. We need people to piss us off, it keeps us honest. Fan bois only bring you down into a world of complacency. Look at MS.

Yeah, OS X was indeed crap ... until they made it more like OS 9. [g]

John knows more than you might think, having been around for a lot of the evolution of computing as we know it. While he loves to bait, he's actually a pretty sharp guy, and there's nothing wrong with being a curmudgeon. I like to think of him as the H.L. Mencken of tech writing.

Sam: I agree. I didn't start seriously thinking about Macs for myself until OS X. Still...

@sam & Orbberius
I've been using Macs & PCs since '92 - when has Windows ever been better at anything (besides marketing) than the Mac? It has always been a lousy imitation, a half assed copy of Macintosh since its inception.
Of course you are going to get flamed for a statement like that, since it is flat out wrong
Comparing OS7 to Win3.1? OS8 to Win95? Seriously,
What are you going sell us next? That GW Bush is a pretty good president?
