Stream audio, video, and pictures from your Mac to a PS3
As the resident Xbox 360 fanboy I had reservations about touching this one, but my Mac love triumphs over all and so I bring you news of a cool tutorial on streaming media from your Mac to a PS3. This method is basically built around the MediaTomb open-source UPnP media server. The tricky part is installing MediaTomb on your Mac with fink and setting it up for the PS3 from the command-line. But once you do, you should be able to stream audio, video, and pictures from your Mac over the network. Needless to say, I haven't tried this myself, but I am intrigued by this note: "Currently MediaTomb does not fully support the XBOX360 as it acts differently from the PS3, but the code is already there to make it work in future versions." I guess we 360 users will just have to make due with Connect360 for now.[via Digg]

Connect360 works pretty good but all in all the Xbox 360 leaves a bit to be desired as a way to view content from your computer on your TV (unless you are running Windows MCE). The thing that bugs me the most is that it doesn't offer any metadata support for either WMV or H.264 streamed to the 360. The only exception is that if you are using the Zune software for sharing you get cover art so hopefully Connect360 will eventually figure out a way to add support for this.
The thing I don't like about Connect360 is that it flattens the folder hierarchy so even if stuff is organized on your computer it is present as one big long list on the 360 (not sure if it does this with videos in iTunes but I don't want my videos in iTunes so I haven't tested it).

Hey, I'm a wii guy myself, but I still feel like this pertains to Mac-related news. I give props to anything that encourages computer/console connectivity.

Good. I was wondering what it would take. PS3 has a vast untapped potential. The instructions don't look to be that bad, though it would be nice if it had been made into something easier to install. I would expect that the program would eventually mature.

So does this let you stream protected content?

I use Twonkyvision, and it works really fine if you stream your content over ethernet. the only problem occurs when i connect my macbook pro (powerbook works flawless) over wifi.... i mean, i can connect my ps3 with the mbp, but every two or three minutes the connection crashes and it starts to connect again....wtf?. but the cool thing is, that twonkyvision works on windows, osx and linux machines :)

EyeConnect works great, but it doesn't support Apple Lossless. It's also heinously expensive.

A 360 fanboy who uses a Mac. Clearly your mac love must be salary motivated. 360 is a quality console through and through. Through your first one to your various replacement models.

External 500GB hard drive hosting all my media hooked up to the PS3 is my fave solution. Then using a PSP I stream PS3 content to the handheld for late-bed-lounging goodness.

don't your files have to be in a certain format for the ps3? also, has anyone tried this yet? how's it working?
