The iPhone headphone jack with its super narrow opening is so recessed that most people simply can't use their personal headphones. The jack is too narrow, their plugs won't fit. Fortunately, Derek K. Miller has found a solution. The iPod Shuffle Sports Case ships with an adapter cable with an extra-thin plug. If you pop over to ebay and search for iPod shuffle sports case. If you're willing to wait for the right auction, you can likely pick up an adapter for just a few dollars.
Thanks Miaz

You should change the name of this blog to the unofficial iPhone blog.

I use the shuffle sportscase adapter when I use my Bose headphones with my iPhone... funny how Apple had the foresight to include this adapter with a $30 case, but not with a $600 phone.
And the adapter is only included for 3rd party phones with the shuffle case, too. The stock buds don't need it at all. They knew 100% that people would want to use their shuffles cases with other headphones... but when you spend countless time and money developing a brand new device, I guess these nice little touches take a back seat, eh?

Yeah, ebay flooded with tons of these as soon as the info broke 3-4 weeks ago. And honestly, I still can't even bring myself to pay five bucks for something like this. I took a razor blade to my Shures, and fixed the problem with 10 minutes of careful trimming. I doubt it'll be a problem.
And UncleWanker, you're the one thousandth dumbass to suggest that. Erica, tell him what he's won.

FWIW: Apple included the adapter with the sport case because the *default* headphones included with the shuffle would not work without it. Since the default iPhone headphones work fine with the iPhone, there is no problem with the iPhone's headphone port as far as Apple is concerned.
In the long run all this won't matter anyway: by Christmas nearly every set of headphones sold will be iPhone compatible.

I'd love to see an RSS feed that includes everything except the iPhone, or better yet, a way to filter the site itself to eliminate all the iPhone-tagged posts.

Uhm... you don't even need an adapter. All you need is a razor blade and a few nerves. I transformed my $199 pair of Shure headphones into being iPhone compatible without hurting their excellent quality. No adapter FTW!

I'm still miffed why folks reading an Apple focused weblog aren't keen on iPhone related topics. What else is there to report right now? Buy an iPhone if you're such an Apple fan.

Scott,
They've posted this WAAAY too much for you to be suggesting that as an idea. They already have it here:

I'll tell you what I'm sick of......people who take the time to read an article they're not interested in and THEN comment on a story that they aren't interested in. If you don't want to hear/read about the iPhone, here's a tip.....SCROLL DOWN! It doesn't take a lot of effort, idiots. You might as well walk into a Barnes & Noble and yell at them for promoting Harry Potter books in the height of it's popularity. It's their JOBS! Just walk on by or go to another isle. NOBODY is forcing to read the article. There's plenty of stuff I'm not interested in on many different sites....just scroll on by or go to another site.

I've had one of these for at least a year. I find it to be the most useful with hard to reach audio jacks, such as the one on the back of my Mac Mini or iPod dock.

I think maybe what some folks understand is that the iPhone posts are most likely to appeal to people who have iPhones or who hope soon to get one. I skip over them, just like I skipped over posts about the iPod with video before I got one. Those posts just don't matter to me and are generally a waste of my time. Yes, this particular post piqued my interest, but it turned out not to be that interesting.
What I see is that the TUAW bloggers, much like a significant group of readers, are very excited about the iPhone. Problem is, it seems to be drowning out the more general Apple discussion. Now, I may be wrong, and the overall number of posts may have increased and the number of non-iPhone posts may be holding steady. But I have to believe that with a limited amount of time and perhaps a quota of posts that the bloggers are skipping over news about iPod/Mac/Apple in favor of iPhone posts.
I can care about Apple's fortunes as a company and how the iPhone changes those without wanting to know specific hacks and tricks on the iPhone.
I'm not sure what the exact solution is, but I hope the TUAW bloggers recognize that the increased attention to iPhone has changed the tenor of the blog. And that's not something you can do for a few months, then change back and expect the same people to be reading. Though I still check in, my attention to TUAW has dropped off dramatically in the last eight weeks. I bet I'm not alone.

Ah. First sentence should be: "I think maybe what some folks *don't* understand …"

The iPhone has changed Apple as a company so I believe that yes, blogs and news sites that cover Apple *exclusively* will change as well.
This is the way the Apple turns. Back in the old days before iPod we discussed the next crappy Performa model Gil was getting ready to pimp. Or perhaps, ever so slightly we'd discuss the "before it's time" Newton.
Apple has changed and so will the news sites covering an ever evolving company. Hence why it's so interesting to cover and has dedicated blogs.

Complaining about the iPhone is old already. Get over it guys or go elsewhere.
It's the new Apple platform and it deserves coverage.

I changed my bookmark from tuaw.com to that ipodfree rss feed, but it seems to be broken at the moment.
Still, it's a breath of fresh air (just look at the tag count in the right column: considering the relative youth of the product, it's weighted average in posts is pretty high)
I used the regular url just to check if something is mentioned about the sanitized feed being kaputt.

So Apple has been reduced to nothing but a phone? It's all phone? Wow. I remember back in the good old days (earlier this week) when Apple was simply mostly phone.

The iphone-free feed isn't working. It's not that we hate the iPhone, it's just that we want TUAW to be like it was pre-iPhone days--relevant to Mac users.
Until this site recognizes that need, I'm going to get my information from other places where scrolling through things isn't so cumbersome.
BTW, the regular feed doesn't seem to be working today either.
