If going all-out with a custom Colorware paint job for your iPhone is a bit too over-the-top, perhaps some new iPhone skin kits from the everlasting DecalGirl are more your style. Printed on premium grade adhesive-backed cast vinyl with a high-gloss clear protective coating, all of their skins boast easy repositioning and goo-free removal (I've never used one of these - can anyone comment on their experiences with accessories like this and their goo factor?).
For the iPhone, DecalGirl already has over 160 designs that can easily be sorted by a large selection of colors and themes, and as a bonus, you also receive a matching iPhone wallpaper to complete the redecoration. Skins seem to all be priced at a reasonable $6.99, with extra protective or stylistic finishes - like Screen Armor, Matte and Gloss - available for $4.50 to $9.99.

I have one of their retro NES skins on my original Nintendo DS. It's been on there for about a year and it's held up great under daily use/abuse and multiple vacations. It leaves no goo behind when you remove it, but be careful when removing it, or you can slightly warp the skin out of shape. Other than that, great products.

The matching wallpaper is a nice touch. I can vouch for DecalGirl Skins not having a sticky residue when removing them. Very high quality stuff.

The best one on that site BY FAR is the tie-dyed skin. That looks so damn hot.

I've used 2 of their Xbox 360 skins before, very good feel to them, no sticky residue after removal. Though I wonder if taking it in and out of your pocket all the time will peel up the edges...

goo-free removal - yes
easy repositioning - not so much (difficult to get everything lined up w/o any bubles)

wow. 99.9% of their designs are hideous. why is that always the case? cool idea, atrocious designers.
let's see, is there anyway i can get a skin of an alien smoking a bong while sitting on a donkey that's eating a waffle? oh snap! decalgirl has me covered!!!
way to ruin something that looks really nice, with something that looks really gaudy. i guess that's the downside of having lots of switchers, they bring a lot of their hideous "design" with them.

I own a couple of their skins and would recommend them, but I wouldn't get one if I had an iPhone. As someone else said, why ruin something that already looks good? I do have skins for my PS2, X-box, and Game Boy Advance though, as I think they are kind of ugly in their natural form and in need of some decoration.
The only one I've removed was when I sold the Game Boy and it came off with no problems. Positioning to get a perfect look is tricky, but not impossible if you're careful. I found the biggest trick was to be careful not to stretch the vinyl as you're pulling off the backing and putting it on, because once it's stretched it will look bad and the shape will be distorted.

Any classic 50's type designs by "Pixeldecor" are me! I'm pixeldecor.com and dang proud of my 15+ year machood. I do not work there but designers get a percentage of sales of their patterns.
I can vouch for them as well, and not just because that I get a piece of my design sales, but as a user. I buy them for everyone I know who gets an ipod. Awesome stuff.
Regarding re-positionable: The new ones reposition better than the older ones. They are harder to remove the longer they are on, but they do come off clean as a whistle. I wouldn't pl an on reusing it though, they do get kinda messed up with the force pulling it off. thats okay though! they work great, find the design you love and you'll likely not want to remove it anyway.
They also, for the ipod/iphone purists, have a all clear skin so you don't cover up the beauty but want protection. They have a screen only one as well. I have a full one on the front of my 5G and it's marvelous (I have a pattern on the back). Not a bubble in sight on either. There is a trick to bubble free application, but it's not hard. reply if you want the

I bought the solid glossy black one from DecalGirl (obviously only useful for the back of the iPhone) and it works well (and covers up the scratches I already made on it from a few drops onto pavement).
I was hoping they would have licensed some superhero (i.e. Captain America or Batman) characters or decent sci-fi characters, but the basic black works for me.

That reads darned near like a press release.
But...
I use DecalGirl skins for my iPod. They're durable, look great, stick well, leave behind no adhesive when removed -- works entirely as advertised. I'd be comfortable putting them on my iPhone. And the matching desktop picture is a very nice touch.

It looks like these would cover up the proximity and ambient light sensors.

There are actual cut outs for those sensors. Although not shown on the image on the website. What is really hot is that you can customize it with your own design for only $5.00 bucks more using their template.
