Rumor: 16GB flash iPods in Sept.
It's Rumor Day here at TUAW and next on the agenda is the iPod. DigiTimes is reporting that a 16GB, flash-based video iPod is imminent. According to their "sources," the new iPod will be announced in September and use NAND flash.
Grab your salt shakers, as you'll need to extract a very large grain to accompany this story. Still, here it is.

An 80GB iPhone is going to be considerably thicker. Flash chips are a lot thinner than the small hard drives, and they probably have the luxury of rearranging the chip locations to fit where they may.

But they should put the touch screen on a normal ipod with its actual hdrive. But whatever, they'll do what they do (make what they want) and we'll do what we do (either buy it or bitch about how it should be better- maybe both).

interesting idea... More so if you consider the previous rumor that states .Mac is due for an overhaul.
I love this "rumor guessing" about Apple. At least consumers are given the chance to discuss their ideas and share some of what they this will/should happen :-)
PS- hope I can post this, because I use my @mac.com address to confirm the posts and it doesn't work very well recently (duh...).
I don't see them updating the nano or even the video ipod with a 16GB flash just yet - it would be (perhaps a minor) reason not to buy an iphone. I think right now, good or bad, Apple will not do anything to cut the iphone sales.

Regarding this particular rumor, it does make some sense for the nano to get a boost to 16 GB. I'm afraid I don't understand the naysaying. If 16 GB is too little space, buy the 30 GB disk based iPod (or whatever is the smallest). It's as if some of you are so self centered that a product is bad if it doesn't exactly fit your particular needs.
16 gb is plenty. all you whiny lil biznitches obviously never had a 1st gen ipod. what doesn't make sense is that you think it's even possible to watch 16 gb worth of video without the ipod running out of juice. i can barely even watch 2 (about 1.5gb) movies on my 60gb videopod. so, if you have 5 gb of video, you're going to have a lot to watch, and you won't even make it through that without having to recharge. who wants to watch the same videos over and over and over again anyway? music is not quite the same, but you'd still have 10gb free, a hell of a lot, for everything else.
if you only have like 30gb of music total, i doubt that the entire 30gb is even worth listening to. if you can't make like 5+ days worth of music work for you, then you've got problems.
The new video iPod will act like a portable Apple TV. You will have a local cache to store your most recent stuff, but will also be able to access anything on your Mac or PC via Wi-Fi, or even over the Internet. Remember, you heard it here first! The iPhone will also gain this feature.

Anyway, 16GB... Good for a Nano. Not for the real iPod. We need a 100G iPod touchscreen with gesture support. And also, can we get an iPhone update that supports touch gestures that simulate the Clickwheel. I hate looking at the screen (though, it is pretty gorgeous) every time I want to skip the song or increase the volume.
Yeah, I can understand boosting the capacity of the Nanos, with 16GB at the high-end.
But cutting the smallest video iPod in half, down to 16GB? I can't imagine it.
It would also be odd if they continued to offer the 30GB and 80GB HDD iPods along with a flash-based one with less capacity, because I'm sure the flash one would cost quite a bit more.
Right now the 8GB flash Nano costs the same as the 30GB iPod with video.
Can't see it happening just yet.
16 gigs is enough space for 20 family guy episodes or 4 movies but i doubt it will be solid state for video
