Rumor mill: August 7 iMac announcements... likely NOT true
[Update 1:15 pm -- And this is why we don't often post product rumors... indications are that this is coming from someone posing as our "reputable source," and other sites have received and debunked the rumor. We tried to reach the source for verification but were not able to do so. Our apologies if this turns out to be complete bunk. -Ed.]We don't often post product rumors hereabouts, although we're certainly not above reporting on them and linking to them; it's just not the regular beat. That said, when an email comes in from a reputable source (thanks, Mr. X) with supposed details on Tuesday's product announcement... well, we gotta let you all know. Pile on the disclaimers (this is a rumor!) and here we go. Our source says that there are plenty of new products coming on Tuesday:
Two new iMacs, with 20 and 24 inch screens, and entirely covered in brushed metal (!) plus the previously hinted new keyboard design and a slightly slimmer enclosure. Even more surprising, our source says the iMacs are shipping with a 2.4GHz Intel Penryn chip. Intel's first 45-nm CPU was originally slated to ship at the end of the year, and it's not clear that Apple could get enough parts to actually build these puppies before October, so take this with a grain of salt. The machines might ship with the dual-core Conroe part instead.
Three new Apple Displays at 20, 24, and 32 inches. These are supposed to have an iSight camera built in.
The Mac Pro will get a speed bump as the Xeon/Woodcrest chips are swapped out for Penryn chips, running at a brisk 2.4, 3.0, and 3.33GHZ.
Lastly, the long-expected end of life for the Mac Mini may finally come around as the machine is expected to be dropped from the product matrix. *sniffle*
Again, this is all unconfirmed. We'll know for sure on Tuesday!

I am going to buy a macbook pro and an ipod tomorrow after the announcement. I doubt those two products will be affected, but I can wait a day.

And a .mac update!??
Due to scheduled maintenance, .Mac members might be intermittently unable to access some .Mac services from 10 AM to 12 PM PDT on 08/07/2007. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I am going to be very disappointed if they drop the Mac Mini from their product line. I've lost count of how many people I've gotten to switch to the low-end mini. The argument so many people have when I suggest they switch from their PC to an iMac is, "But I already have a monitor and all the other stuff."
It's a valid stance to have. If you're just some average user who thinks the text at any resolution higher than 1024x768 is "too small", a Mac Mini is absolutely perfect. IF they do axe the Mini, I really really really hope they bring in a very low-end iMac or eMac to replace the Mini's price point.

Exciting news if true! In particular, this is the first rumor thread I've read that mentions a possible refresh/redesign for the Cinema Displays, which have been languishing basically untouched since their introduction in 2004. We'll know in just over 24 hours...

I really hope they don't eliminate Mac mini... maybe a redesign, make it a tower, like a mini Mac Pro, but not eliminate it.

Besides some refreshes (overdue mini, imac, lcd) I sincerely hope there are a couple new products like a macbook mini or whatever they would call it. Many would love an UMPC ... and count me as one of them.
As for axing the mini?! I would hate to see that happen. If they update it a bit (cpu, gpu, hdd, memory) they will sell boatloads.
Apple should expand their computer product lines, not shrink them.

With how hard they where pushing the Mac Mini at WWDC for use with Podcast Producer i would be floored if they would remove it from the line up with out a replacement in the works.

So all Apple will over is the iMac and Mac Pro? No Mac mini or another "headless" Mac for under $1000? This has to be the worst decision in the history of business. Boo Apple! :-(

32 inches? Good lord.
And I'll echo the sentiment on the supposed elimination of the mini. It brings a lot of business into Apple, and it's a shame that they want to go in another direction.

24 inch? SHIT! I'd totally buy a second apple cinema just for dual screen and isight goodness, but if it's 24" instead of the old 23" that's going to f@#k my whole desk feng shui.
No buy.

So will the 20 inch be the smallest imac and the 17" is done? Right now the 17" is $999 and the 20" is $1499. Is the cheapest imac now going to be over a grand? A mini still has a place. Offer it with slightly outdated chip to keep cost down. Mini customers don't need the latest and greatest.

Many sites received this same submission. It's a fake.

I too think that it would be a mistake to get rid of the MINI. I think that there is more use for the MINI over Apple TV. If the MINI had the price point that it had in the G4 days it would be a better value than it is but it is still great.

I too hope the mini part is not true. I also hope that Apple does not make the 23 inch a 24. This is because that panels that Apple currently users are higher quality that the standard 24 inch panels. Unless Apple finds a 24inch panel that has resolution greater that 1920x1200, I'll be disappointed.
I also think a .Mac update is in the works too. Macromurs notes that a service update for .Mac is due for tomorrow and that during The D conference in may Steve mentioned something about .Mac receiving updates soon.

Why would they switch out Xeons for Penryn??
Wouldn't Apple have to totally redesign their logicboard?
I can see if they made a Mini Mac Pro or something that used Penryn. Faster RAM and less expensive perhaps? That would make my day.

No more Mac mini? Looks like I'll be waiting a long time to become a Mac user. Plus, I really don't want an AIO system like the iMac.

With all the talk about the Halo effect of the iPod and iPhone, I would think the Mac Mini would have something of a Halo effect too. The Mini is the cheapest way to test a Mac and I'm sure there have been people that have gone on to buy more Macs based on their Mini experience.
