Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1
I bet the Mac Pro felt a little left out of all the excitement yesterday, since the iMac got all the press. Worry not, Mac Pro, today Apple is updating something that impacts you! That's right, Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 has hit the street. This firmware update, 'adjusts fan behavior in the Mac Pro.' As with any firmware update it is very important to read the directions carefully, so don't go saying I didn't warn you.
Thanks, Jt Hollister.

This was the worst update ever. The fan works fine, but my external HD has been crapped on. I can't get anything from it. Not even when trying it on another computer. I think it needs a rescue. Any thoughts on the best (ans cheapest) way to do this?

Don't install this one.
Someone help me!.
Mine seemed fine after the update ... so I put it to sleep and went off to town. When I came home and woke it up again, I at first thought there was a water truck having trouble coming up the mountain. The roar/whine continued and the truck never arrived; I looked for another cause and realized the curtain behind my CPU was flapping wildly ... but there was no wind outside.
I shut the machine down immediately, then when my heart was back to normal I booted up again. It is now completely silent and the fan has not run at all. I have an app that monitors temperatures, but have not found a database showing what the acceptable ranges are. Anyone know where I might find one? This is all making me VERY nervous.
Following the SMC update 1.1 I am experiencing fans running very fast each time I start the computer. It sounds like the MacPro is going to takeoff.
Never experienced Fan problems prior to this update. Anyway to revert back to the previous version?
Augh...after update in my mac pro fan's make extremely NOIZ...all the time. HOW TO SWITCH THEM OFF ?????
yikes, that firmware update to my system is now causing my fan and exhaust to run at ~2500rpm! every 30-40 minutes, then drop back down to ~500rpm.

I couldn't (even using Spotlight), so I selected "cancel" on that window which took me back to the main firmware update window. I selected "restart" on the firmware update window which brought up the "Where is System Events" window again. When I again selected "cancel" my computer then restarted and the firmware update executed. Afterwards verified that the SMC Version is 1.7f10. So the SMC firmware update apparently worked, but I still don't know why I was queried about the location of "System Events." This was not the typical seamless Apple software update experience.
