Keyboard software update 1.1 is available
I think this past week represents the most we've ever written about a keyboard.Apple's cryptic description of keyboard software update 1.1 - released this morning - reads:
" Install this software to use your aluminum Apple Keyboard and take advantage of the special features."
Run this installer if you're lucky enough to own one of those paper-thin keyboards, and let us know how it goes.

I've installed the software update and it remapped all my f keys except for f3 exposé and f4 dashboard. Neither will work.

I think the software update is for the Mac to support the new special keys, not for the keyboard.
#2, you'll need to go into the Keyboard preferences and select the map function keys to fn buttons, or whatever that setting is called - or you can access the F-keys by holding the fn key down and using the F-keys; it's in the same cluster with page up/page down/etc.

Finally. Installed with my PowerMac G5 and now all is well. All the top row function keys work as pictured without going to system preferences and setting something special. This keyboard is nice!

Now will the power button on the new bluetooth keyboard wake up a sleeping or shut down mac?

So, I'm assuming the wired and wireless keyboards are available at the Apple Store. The on-line store had them listed as 3-5 weeks, so I assumed it was the same for brick and mortar Apple Stores.

I don't really like the feel of typing on the new keyboard. Some keys (particularly the spacebar) are difficult to press when typing quickly (and I really like low-profile keyboards on laptops, like the MacBook Pro, for instance)

I think it puts the keyboard to sleep, not the mac. But I am getting it tommorow so i wouldn't know, but that s my guess.

@Debbie:
Is it possible to remap the function keys like they are with the old keyboard? I mostly mean have F9-12 do the Expose + Dashboard functions...
If there is no way to do that..I likely will not give up my G4 keyboard

Doesn't seem like checking the option on keyboard preference for F9 and F12 doesn't change the function (F12 still works the volume). The keyboard setup looks so different I don't miss this option. The little picture on the keys shows action of function key and for me, who didn't memorize the previous functions, this is much better.

Hmmm okay thanks for the reply.
But it looks to me like there is only ONE expose button now, F3, am I correct? And I assume that shows all windows?
I'm one of those people who have disabled the standard Fn keys on my macbook pro, so to get at, say Volume, I press fn+F4 or whatever, and if I just press F9 without holding fn, then I get Expose-show all.
Either way, I do really like the looks of them and I'm sure a hack or remapper will crop up somewhere if I dont like the new mappings

Does anyone have any idea of when the wireless keyboards will become available without being purchased with a mac?

This is good. I was in the Apple store yesterday w/ the new iMacs and NONE of the keyboard function keys worked properly. F12 was still dashboard, despite being set to volume up and f11 expose instead of f3 and the brightness buttons were f14 and 15 not one and 2. So now with this update Apple might be able to sell a few more Macs and keyboards.
It didn't seem like a smart idea to display keyboards who's keys didn't do the right things!

I've installed the update and all the shortcut keys work as advertised apart from F3 (expose) and F4 (dashboard) - nothing happens when I hit these. This seems to be the same problem as post no. 2. Anyone else having this issue? I don't think the F3 and F4 keys are working at all, is there any way to tell?
Regarding availability. Ship dates at the apple on line store (in the UK at least) fell from 2-4 weeks to 3-5 days within the last 24 hours. The store in Manchester had about 10 USB keyboards left today, but were estimating (guessing) 2 weeks for bluetooth ones.

Bluetooth ones are still 3-5 weeks in the online store in the US. I ordered it hoping that those were BS safety dates, but I'm getting antsy.

Last night, I went to the Mayfair Mall Apple Store (Wauwatosa, WI...near Milwaukee). None of the function keys worked on any of the 3+ new keyboards I tried. I'm hoping this update fixes the problem.
