Meet the New Macs, A Little Faster Than the Old Macs

Personally, I crave speed. No, not the kind that can often be purchased on some local street corner in that part of town on the wrong side of the tracks. No, I'm referring to processors, front side buses, RAM and other factors that go into calculating the raw, unbridled, number-crunching power of the latest and greatest Macs.

No doubt you are aware that Apple recently released an updated version of its flagship prosumer desktop iMac as well as an updated Mac Mini too. The new iMacs feature changes both external and internal with increases to the clock speed of its Intel Core Duo 2 processors as well as a switch to the faster Santa Rosa chipset. Yes, that all sounds great but what does it mean in terms of the new iMac's ability to crunch those numbers?

Well, according to Primate Labs' tests on the new 24" iMac, as featured at Apple Insider, it doesn't help a great deal unless you're using one of those math-intensive apps like Photoshop or Aperture. In that case, according to the article: "If you're running memory-intensive applications you'll certainly notice an increase in performance with the new 24-inch iMac. Heck, the fact that the new 24-inch iMac supports 4GB of RAM while the old 24-inch iMac supports 3GB of RAM might be enough to convince you to get one." Good point. More RAM is a good thing.
So what about the new Mac Mini? Changes to the diminutive Mac include a switch to Core Duo 2 processors as well as an increase in clock speed, which should provide some sort of speed bump over previous models. The results, according to Primate Labs, followed that logic. "Moving from the Core Duo to the Core 2 Duo brings modest performance improvements without an increase in clock speed, and moving from 1.83GHz to 2.0GHz brings (unsurprisingly) another modest increase in performance."

What about those of us considering a move from a PowerPC based Mac Mini to one of the new Intel Core Duo 2 ones? They have an answer at the site for that question too. "Of course, if you're moving from a PowerPC (or Core Solo) Mac mini, you'll notice a huge improvement in performance, not only from the improved Core 2 architecture, but also from the addition of an extra processing core," said the tester.

So, if your considering a new iMac, are a frequent user of Photoshop, Aperture or other math-intensive apps and crave speed as I do, a new 24" iMac should perhaps be in your future. Or, if you're like me and still have an older PowerPC Mac Mini around "just in case," it's probably time to retire that Mac in favor of one of its newer siblings.

For those who have yet to buy heres an update on mine. Repeated hard crashes after a mouse click independent of application or web site. These are crashes as if you pulled the plug out of the wall! Not freezes or hangups.
Now last night internet connection going out and finally quit altogether yet worked when ethernet cable plugged into old mac.

Finally after several calls and doing the same old jump-through-hoop routines I got a main guy type at apple. Alas he made me do the dreaded erase and reinstall routine. That lost about 6 hrs of work. lol. Wants me to run it with nothing but the supplied aps for a week or so and see....

I have to say these mouse crashes were odd. Like sending a signal to shut off the power. Not your normal 'slow' shutdwn screen

I put together a little version of what the new iMacs might look like if reduced energy consumption was actually top on Apple's priority list. Maybe we'll see something more similar in the next generation. In the meantime, I've code named the concept iMac Zi (Zero Impact) and am soliciting ideas for a follow up to make it even better. http://blog.greenesthost.com/?p=9

Poster 1: I've not known Apple to give out coupons for release of a new OS. If you purchase a system on the day of release then you are entitled to a copy of the particular software.

Poster 4: Leopard will be $129

Nathan, regarding the washed out color on your 20 inch iMac:
Go to System Prefs, Display, and Color. They come set on "iMac", but the other profiles have richer colors.

Very true. I came across the same thing yesterday.
Now on to s.o.s. apple to find the cause of several mysterious shutdowns. Has anyone else had this problem on the new imacs? It's not a freeze or a hangup with the spinning disk. The system just plain shuts down after a mouse click. Has happened several times doing various things.

Well the glossy screen has become a deal-breaker for our office needs. We needed two of these for graphics and web design (in-house for a non-profit). I am back to the drawing board in regards to figuring out what to do. What may happen is just continuing to use my MacBook Pro with the Apple display and purchasing a Mini for the front desk, and wait 6 months to see if Steve finally wakes up to the fact that more businesses are using these displays for WORK and not PLAY.

Well mine came today and as far as appearance, I love it. Had to order via online to get printer rebate. I have had it crash several times on restart but want to get a handle on when this happens before I call Apple.

Spending all day resetting up accounts and finding out things I had forgotten how I did! Anyone remember how to have a downloaded jpeg show on desktop as the actual image instead of ***.***jpeg?

Bought a 20" iMac Saturday. Had to wait until then because, of all things, the local Apple store was closed for remodeling. This mac is awesome. The speed compared to my old iMac is unreal. Now I can watch movie trailers in HD. Love the black logo. Like the glass monitor because my kids always have peanut butter on their fingers when they point to their favorite Pokemon character. Keyboard is too cool for words. It's like a work of art on my desk. Anyone that says this release is anything but great is itchin' for a fight.

I'm waiting on Leopard to upgrade my PPC Mac Mini unlike some people the $179 does make a difference to my shrinking computer budget. I don't feel the need to go upgrade my computer right now. Guess I'm one of those folks who like to squeeze as much out of the lemon before throwing it away. In this case I'll be passing on a less than 2 year old computer that hasn't given me any problems to someone else who needs one.
