Multisite and iWebSites for iWeb now supports '08 version

For most users, iWeb keeps things simple by creating and managing a single, all-encompassing site file stored in your home directory. The downside for anyone who would like to create more than one site with iWeb, however, is that the app doesn't offer any easy way to do so; users have to drill into ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/ and either manually move or delete the single site file in that folder, or pick up an app like Multisite for iWeb or iWebSites. Both of these apps allow you to easily create independent iWeb site files that can be published to different local folders and subsequently uploaded with external FTP apps to anywhere you chose.

Fortunately, both apps have just been updated to work with the new iWeb '08, though note that iWebSites is at a 2.2 alpha stage, as the developer isn't positive all the kinks have been worked out yet. While I haven't used either of these apps, a quick perusal of their features sets reveals that iWebSites has a unique trick up its sleeve: it can merge two different iWeb site files into one, though it apparently can take a while. Anyone have experience with these apps?

Multisite for iWeb is available from Clarkwood Software for $19.95 with a demo available, while iWebSites is offered as donationware from Cocoadrillo Software.

I enjoy iWebsites as well, wondering though how to use the new feature on iWeb for using a shortened URL with mutiple sites from iWebsites. I have three different sites via iWebsites and would like three seperate URL's. Already own two domain names and want to transfer them to the sites on .mac

grifmusic is correct. I have 3 different sites and have had no problems (really - but more in a minute.) As mentioned, just keep the domain files in separate folders. Doesn't matter where. When you use iWeb '08 to open an existing domain file for the first time, it 'updates' the file. Some type of one time conversion, as is often the case with major new releases. But this is where I ran into a problem.

Once the conversion was done, I made some minor site changes and hit the publish button (lower left). Everything seemed normal till I hit visit the site - got error message saying site does not exist. I could see it fine within iWeb, but not on the web. A call to Apple tech support did not help, at first. The gentleman was nice enough but finally realized he was in over his head and passed me off to a 'product specialist'.

Turns out the new iWeb uses a different scheme for storing site files in your dot mac space. Simple solution - just use the pull down menu to do a Publish All. No harm done; back in business.

And yes, in the course of troubleshooting, the initial tech support person got me in the situation where I had parts of two sites open concurrently in iWeb. But I can't say if this is yet a normal feature, cause they seemed a bit surprised at this turn of events.

Anyhow, if you can live with iWeb's feature limitations, I find it a great tool for creating nice looking sites.

I have been using iWebSites since v1.0. It has rocked since then and continues to in iWeb08. I've never combined sites, but it's a feature I like knowing that I have if I ever do need it.

I just wonder if it fixes the coding for you. I tried iWeb, and had problems. Why? Well I thought I could just drag pictures from media and whatnot.. What happended? It uploaded the files without changing the names of the files so my pictures didn't show (the whole capitalize/symbol/space problem.)

You don't need these programs. All you need to do is keep seperate site "domain" files in seperate folders. Then double-click each individual domain file to open iWeb instead of launching iWeb first. You can also copy that "domain" file and bring it to another machine to work on.

Is there any (comfortable) way to edit your iWeb/.Mac website on two different machines, eg. iMac at home and MacBook on the road?
