Thanks to Microsoft Office Live Communications Server I send a lot of time logged into Microsoft Messenger for Mac. Overall I have fairly positive feelings towards Messenger, but there was one thing that really burnt my biscuits. though to be fair it wasn't really Messenger's fault. Ever since installing Safari Beta 3 on my Mac closing any Messenger window would result in the program freezing, requiring a Force Quit to make it usable once more (I assume some change in WebKit was throwing Messenger for a loop) . Luckily, Microsoft Messenger for Mac 6.0.3, released today, fixes this issue. 6.0.3 also "includes improved performance during file transfers and improvements to Kerberos authentication. It also introduces support for the Danish, Finnish, and Norwegian languages."Sadly, my two major gripes with Messenger:
- No ability to set a note while using a corporate account
- The long winded 'don't give your credit card numbers to people on chat'

You can clear out the "Don't be an idiot" message on all new message windows easily enough:
1. Quit Microsoft Messenger. Right (ctrl) click on Microsoft Messenger and choose "Show Package Contents"
2. Navigate to: Contents > Resources > English.lproj
3. Open the "InstantMessageWindow.strings" document with your favorite text editor.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the list, to the string "IMWarning." Erase everything between the double quotation marks, but be sure to leave the marks themeselves. So, that last line should now say: IMWarning = "";
5. Save, close, you're done.
Start up MM, and open up a new message window. You're set.

Sure there's a difference, Corporate accounts no longer share the same windows, and universal binary support. So it's now native with Intel Macs. Yeah, those Apple techs were working overtime over at MS. Who knows, maybe they'll have the third colored MSN icon by Messenger:Mac 7.0.

All right. This is how it's going. Currently your only alternative to webcam use during chat or T-conferencing with windows based PCs is Yahoo Messenger for Mac beta. Even then it's just like using an old cruddy webcam. What's that? What's the difference between webcams and iSight? Well, your iSight uses H.264 compression. The highest quality compression known right now. So you get fluid full screen with streaming vidyas. The Apple techs aren't going to release a Messenger:Mac with the same capabilities as Yahoo. This is the plan: wait until Microsoft adopts H.264 compression (already done with the shipping of Vista) then wait until Apple gives the greenlight on Safari 3.0 gold. This way, they kill two birds with one stone. Full screen video and webkit compatibility with Safari 3.0. Now, here's the downside. There are rumors that iChat will be released for Windows by 2009. So, Apple may not give the greenlight to the Apple/MS techs until iChat is released (if ever), allowing time for MSN users to switch over to iChat.
