The Mac collector

When we first got tipped this story (by RP-- thanks!), I was like "Oh boy, another guy who found a Newton on eBay and calls himself a Mac collector." But no, this guy is the real deal. He's got 100 Macs in his basement, including 30 Mac Classics and 18 original iMacs, as well as both a Lisa and a 20th Anniversary Macintosh. And these aren't just sitting around on shelves with cords all over the place-- oh no. These are set up just as Jobs would want them to be-- booted, running, cleanly placed, in an immaculate workspace, gently lit from above. If there's a Mac heaven, it's in this guy's basement in Missouri.

The guy, named Jeremy Mehrle, says he started buying them when he was single to fill the space in his house. I don't know if he charges admission, but if so, I'd pay.

I think i have to add myself to the "Mac Collector" category, i have been a fully qualified Apple engineer for the last 20 years and have ended up with quite a museum!

Take a look at my website http://www.comteccomputers.co.uk

Click the museum tab on the left!

I've visited Jeremy's house before, while things were still a work in progress. It was amazing even then.

He's not just some dude looking to buy all the Macs cuz he thinks they're cool, but he really loves them.

I have a 20th and my buddy has a 20th and a Lisa. Combined we have about 60 or so. Plus the peripherals. Think he knows how to launch AppleWorks on his Apple II?

This is awesome! I've always wanted to collect old Macs. If I ever have the money and space, I think this would be a great hobby.

I interviewed Jeremy for Episode 7 of the RetroMacCast. We're planning to have him on the podcast again really soon.

To everyone worried about his electric bill, he doesn't leave them on. I bet they're only on for about 30 minutes when a CNN reporter comes by or for a few hours if friends are visiting.
